Authorities didn't know whether the baby was stillborn or died after birth. Garrett Haake of NBC station KSHB of Kansas City, MO, reports. By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News November 06, 2013 Prosecutors were deliberating Wednesday what — if any — charges to bring against a Missouri family who had a dead baby entombed in a concrete-filled tub in their back yard. The discovery was made when police in Pleasant Hill, in Cass County about 20 miles southeast of Kansas City, were tracking down a report of a stolen car, which was found behind the home Monday, authorities told NBC station KSHB of Kansas City. During the investigation, police learned that a baby might have died or been stillborn at the home about a month ago, Police Chief Robert Driscoll told the local newspaper, the Cass County Democrat. With the permission of the family's father, police began a search and found a plastic feed bucket filled with concrete, Driscoll said. The baby's body was inside, he said. Authorities wouldn't identify the family or specify whether the baby was a boy or a girl. They told KSHB it still wasn't known whether the baby was stillborn or died after birth. The father was briefly detained for questioning but was released, and the family is cooperating with the investigation, authorities said. The family's mother has been in the hospital for several weeks, Driscoll said. Four other children living in the home were staying with grandparents. A decision on charges was pending an autopsy report, he said. Rick Gleim, a neighbor, told KSHB that the discovery had shocked the small neighborhood, where suspicions that something was wrong had been discussed for several days. The family kept odd hours, and in recent weeks, it had been having many visitors, Gleim said. But the mother hadn't been seen for weeks. "The sad thing about it is I'm even scared now to live here, because I'm not going to know what's going on next door," he said. "All of a sudden, it's like 'wow,' and you find all of this stuff going on."" /> Authorities didn't know whether the baby was stillborn or died after birth. Re: *Update* Dead Baby Found Encased in Concrete in Missouri Home
The mother and father of the house are reportedly cooperating with Pleasant Hill police, who are investigating the how the month old infant died. BY STEPHEN REX BROWN / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS NOVEMBER 7, 2013 Police in Pleasant Hill, MO, reportedly found a baby in a feed bucket filled with concrete. Police found a dead baby entombed in a bucket full of concrete in Missouri, according to reports. Cops in the tiny town of Pleasant Hill were called around 6 p.m. Monday about suspected drug activity and a stolen vehicle at a two-story home on the sleepy block of Cline Street, according to the Cass County Democrat Missourian. Police searched the garage and made the awful discovery: a feed bucket filled with concrete and a month old baby. “There’s no reason that a baby should be put in placement of concrete in a tub. That’s not a proper burial, and that’s not what we all stand for,” neighbor Kurt Brent told Fox 4 Kansas City, who added the mother of the home had not recently appeared pregnant. It was unclear whether the baby was stillborn or had died of other causes. Police would not release the results of an autopsy. The grisly find shook neighbors in the town of just over 8,000 people. It was unclear Thursday whether the baby was stillborn or had died of other causes. “I’m scared to even live here,” neighbor Rick Gleim told 41 Action News. The father of the home was questioned Tuesday but released, according to the Democrat Missourian. The mother of the home had been hospitalized for several weeks, the paper reported. Both were reportedly cooperating with cops. Their four children were in the care of their grandparents. As of Wednesday evening, no one had been charged. On Wednesday, Fox 4 reported the home had been burglarized — despite crime scene tape ringing the scene. A dispatcher at the Pleasant Hill Police Department was not authorized to give information regarding the ongoing investigation Thursday morning.
