Update: 1971 Cold Case Closed....

This is an update to a previous post I made about this story. These two girls had vanished without a trace and been missing since 1971.

These two girls had been on the way to a party at a rock quarry and disappeared. Accusations were made that a local boy had something to do with the disappearance. The farm the boy lived on at the time was searched more recently with ground penetrating radar and some of it excavated looking for the girls and the car. In the end, it was ruled that the girls had just had an accident near a bridge, and ended up in the creek below.

Latest news story: ELK POINT, SD - A more than 40-year-old cold case has been closed after South Dakota authorities announced on Tuesday the remains found in an old Studebaker submerged in a Union County creek are that of Cheryl Miller and Pam Jackson. The announcement has brought closure to the Miller and Jackson families. It is also bringing relief to another Union County family that was accused with being connected to the disappearance of the teen girls.

The Lykken family farm was the center of a state investigation ten years ago when agents thought the Lykken's may have something to do with Miller and Jackson's disappearance.

The farm was searched for four days in August of 2004 and again in November 2004. Kerwyn Lykken was at Tuesday's announcement and had a heated exchange with South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley since it now has been revealed that the Lykken's had nothing to do with it. Kerwyn's brother was even charged with murder - charges that were later dismissed. Kerwyn talked with us on the phone Tuesday night while he was driving to Minnesota to visit family.

A passer by found the submerged Studebaker that contained the girls' remains last September and reported it to state investigators.

Evidence in the car and forensic testing led authorities to believe the girls just got into a car crash and plunged into the creek.

I tried to find your original post but I couldn't. Maybe you can locate it and all the threads can be merged?

Re: Update: 1971 Cold Case Closed....

It took them THAT long to look at the creek?

Edit: They never did search the creek - a passerby found it. What great detective skills. *Double face palm*

I'm surprised the car isn't more rusted out.
