Around a million Ukrainians who live and work in Poland send some PLN 20 billion back home every year, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has said.

Speaking during the ninth Europe-Ukraine Forum in the central Polish city of Łódź, Waszczykowski said: “More than a million Ukrainians living in Poland transfer around PLN 10 billion annually to Ukraine through official banking channels alone.” Such workers hand over the same amount again in cash while visiting their families in Ukraine, Waszczykowski added. “This means that in the past year, according to the National Bank of Poland, as a result of working in Poland, Ukrainian citizens transferred [the equivalent of] around five billion euros. This is an important form of support for the Ukrainian economy.”

There are roughly 1 million of your fellow countrymen and women living and working here in the UK. I live in an area with a high population of Polish and other eastern European people, which does not bother me in the slightest; as I prefer to live in a diverse area. (And I like your cheap beer!!)

I regularly see migrant workers sending money overseas using money transfer services and the post office. I presume also that many do this through their UK bank accounts and other legitimate means.

I however, also see migrants spending lots of money in all areas of the British economy. Polish people have a lot of choice in Polish and other European shops in my area, and the tax that these businesses raise must be a huge a boost to the UK's economy.

Studies have shown, (and ignore the rubbish that's published online by the Daily Mail) that migrant workers contribute more to the British economy than they take out.

They also do jobs (and often speak better English) that British people just refuse to do.

on topic though, as danielsan said polish workers send loads of money home from the UK....and even worse its they're allowed to draw unemployment benefits for 6 months after they return home to poland....

i don't give a shit if they send money home but claiming benefits after they've left the country is something i think should really be stopped.....

I'm not entirely sure that's the case. I used to work for DWP some years ago, and I've just had a quick look online. I can't see any proof that receiving JSA on leaving the UK is possible.. I don't think I'm wrong, but if you can prove that's the case, I'll admit it.

i remember the story from a few years ago..

here's a link to the story, and a link to a .gov page which says it's possible to claim benefits in an EEA country and why you may claim....maybe i misunderstand it and i'm surprised they haven't closed the 'loophole' they mantioned if they haven't....

oh, and i see it's three months and not six

The first link regards Northern Ireland, and they have a separate welfare system to mainland UK.

The second Telegraph link is dated 2008, and I believe the rules have changed since then. I do think some child benefit can be claimed from abroad, but I think that loop hole is going to be filled too.

how did you come to that conclusion? the first sentence of the article is 'Job centre staff in Poland say increasing numbers of people are coming back to their home country after losing work in the UK and Ireland.'

and then the article goes on mentioning both

when i went to Kiev i almost got whiplash from seeing so many beautiful women..
