Berlin attack victims: Heroic lorry driver Lukasz Urban 'fought with killer before market massacre'



A heroic Polish lorry driver fought with his hijacker in the seconds before he crashed the truck into a Christmas market in Berlin, police have revealed.

Father-of-one Lukasz Urban, 37, tried desperately to wrestle the wheel from his attacker in the final seconds before the heavy goods vehicle was driven into the crowds.

Mr Urban was one of 12 people who died in the atrocity, with another 50 injured, 14 of whom are fighting for their lives in hospital

Media reports in Germany quoted investigators saying that, judging by his wounds which included multiple stab injuries, he was alive and fighting as the truck headed for its human targets.

An autopsy concluded that he was shot, either in the final moments before the carnage or when the lorry came to a stop.

"He must have put up some fight," the newspaper Bild quoted a police officer as saying.

Police believe Mr Urban, cousin of the firm's owner in Poland, was grappling with the wheel when he received the gunshot that took his life.

Isis has claimed responsibility for the attack and police believe it possible that the killer may have been trained as an HGV operator.

One investigator said it would have been "very hard for someone who didn't know what they were doing to drive an articulated truck through the streets of Berlin."

Mr Urban had parked his truck up at the Friedrich-Krause-Ufer in Moabit, ready to deliver it Tuesday morning to a Thyssen-Krupp factory.

'Dangerous' suspect wanted over Berlin Christmas market attack 'linked to terror group behind Tunisia beach massacre'

The man, who has been identified as Anis Amri, is thought to be 23 years old and from the city of Tataouine.

The Tunisian man wanted in connection with the deadly attacks on a crowded Christmas market in Berlin was under surveillance by German authorities for months because he was suspected of planning an attack, according to Berlin prosecutors, The Associated Press reported.

Authorities also say that the suspect, Anis Amri, also allegedly had ties to radical Islam and had his application for asylum rejected.

German authorities have issued a wanted notice for 24-year-old Amri in connection with Monday’s attack. Amri was under surveillance for several months this year, prosecutors said in a statement, according to The AP. Authorities had launched an investigation on Amri on March 14 following a tip from federal security agencies.

The tip warned that Amri, who was considered a potential threat by authorities in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, might be planning a break-in to finance the purchase of automatic weapons for use in the attack, The AP reported. The surveillance was called off in September after no evidence was found to substantiate the warning.

Germany's chief federal prosecutor told lawmakers that Amri provided a "solid lead" for investigators after he left his wallet in the cab of the truck, said German lawmaker Burkhard Lischka. But the lawmaker added that it is "not clear" that Amri is the perpetrator of the crime.

"This is a suspect, not necessarily the perpetrator," Germany's federal interior minister Thomas de Maiziere told reporters Wednesday. "We are still investigating in all directions."

Germany's federal prosecutor’s office offered a reward of up to 100,000 euros for information leading to his arrest. He is deemed to be "under urgent suspicion" and could be "dangerous and armed," authorities warned in the wanted notice.

Berlin market attack suspect killed in shootout in Italy: security source.

Anis Amri, the suspect behind Monday night’s terror attack in Berlin, has been killed in a police shootout in Milan, according to an unconfirmed report by Panorama, an Italian news magazine. Panorama claimed in an exclusive report this morning that Amri was killed in a routine traffic stop at 3am today in the Piazza I Maggio in the Sesto San Giovanni neighborhood. The report was not immediately confirmed by the Italian government or any law enforcement officials.

Panorama reported that Amri pulled out a gun and began shooting at the officers. It said that an officer who had been on the job for nine months then killed the suspect. The officer was shot in the shoulder but is alive. Italy’s top law enforcement official, the interior minister, Marco Minniti, is due to address the press at 10:45 am (9.45am GMT). Amri was believed to have spent several years in Italy before he traveled to Germany.T here were separately reports of a shootout in Milan in several Italian newspapers.

The Berlin Christmas market attack suspect recorded a video message pledging allegiance to Isis and vowing to take revenge on European "crusaders" for bombing Muslims.

In the video, a man claimed to be Amri says: "My message to crusaders bombing Muslims everyday... Their blood will not go in vain. We are a nation behind them and will take revenge for them.

"I call on my Muslim brothers everywhere... Those in Europe, kill the crusader pigs, each person to their own ability."

An Italian police chief said his men had no idea they might be dealing with Amri when they approached him outside a station in Sesto San Giovanni, a suburb of the northern city of Milan.

Antonio De Iesu told reporters that Amri had arrived in Milan's main railway station from France at around 1 a.m. and had then travelled to Sesto San Giovanni, where two young policemen approached him because he looked suspicious.

"We had no intelligence that he could be in Milan," De Iesu said. "They had no perception that it could be him otherwise they would have been much more cautious."

He failed to produce any identification so the police requested he empty his pockets and his small backpack. He pulled a loaded gun from his bag and shot at one of the men, lightly wounding him in the shoulder.

Amri then hid behind a nearby car but the other police officer managed to shoot him once or twice, killing him on the spot. Amri was identified by his finger prints.

De Iesu said that besides the gun, Amri had been carrying a small pocket knife. He also had a few hundred euros on him but no cell phone.

Amri once spent four years in jail in Italy and police were trying to work out if he knew someone in Sesto.

An automatic braking system fitted to the truck used in the Christmas market terrorist attack in Berlin prevented the vehicle from ploughing further into the crowds and averted even worse carnage, German authorities said on Thursday.

Anis Amri, the 24-year-old Tunisian asylum seeker who allegedly carried out the attack, killed 12 people and injured 48 others when he rammed the lorry into a Christmas market in the German capital on December 19.

The 40-tonne truck was halted by the automatic braking system, bringing it to a standstill after about 250ft and “preventing even worse consequences,” said Frauke Koehler, a spokeswoman for German prosecutors.

The system, adopted by EU countries in 2012, kicks in when it senses a collision.

The truck used in the Bastille Day terrorist attack in Nice in July was older and not equipped with the advanced braking system. Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, the man behind the Nice attack, was able to drive more than a mile along the Promenade des Anglais, killing more than 80 people and injuring hundreds, before being shot dead by police.

There had been speculation that the Berlin lorry attack had been brought to a halt by the heroic actions of its Polish driver, whose vehicle was hijacked a few hours before.

But it appears that the driver, Lukasz Urban, was probably shot dead shortly before the assault was launched by Amri, who was killed by Italian police in Milan on Friday.

This thing that german news shout about polish driver being shot before the assault and advanced braking system being used to stop the truck already was debunked - Polish source
- basically, when the system goes off the truck leaves the braking marks of the tires on the road. This "news" is a made on purpose just becouse people in germany filed a petition to honor the driver with a german medal - and given the german policy on polish people they just can't do it, heck, they can't even say "polish" and "hero" in the same sentence. In fact, given the circumstances, german police is trying to interrupt polish investigation because there is a great posibility that the driver was killed not by the terrorist but the german police itself.
