Dog Mauling Case Grows More Complicated

TARRANT COUNTY, Texas - City of Fort Worth officials are delaying the decision to put down four dogs that attacked a toddler in a back yard near Lake Worth yesterday until they can figure out exactly who owns the animals.

The announcement seemingly reverses the statement made earlier Tuesday by Fort Worth Code Compliance, which said the dogs would be put down.

Monday afternoon, 18-month-old Chance Walker, Jr., was severely bitten when he crawled through a doggie door at his family's home and into the back yard where four Boxer dogs attacked him.

The accident happened in the about 4 p.m. behind the family's home in the 7800 block of Eastland Ave., near Lake Worth. That's in unincorporated Tarrant County, but the City of Fort Worth has custody of the animals.

A neighbor called 911 yesterday after hearing a woman scream. The toddler's parents were sleeping inside the home when the accident happened. According to their Facebook pages, they both work at Dunkin Donuts.

"When I got to the back yard, I saw the grandfather and he had the baby in his arms," said neighbor Linda Kucker. "His ear was bit almost completely off. It was hanging by a little piece of skin in the back."

Four generations of the Walker family live on the street, and emotions ran high in the aftermath of the tragic accident. At one point, the child's great-grandfather crossed the street where television crews were set up and threatened reporters and photographers.

Then the boy's grandmother flew into a rage when a neighbor made a remark about the accident, and allegedly assaulted the woman in front of deputies and FOX 4's camera.

Lena Grace Brown, 45, was handcuffed at the scene and charged with assault/bodily injury. She was still jailed earlyTuesday afternoon, but was expected to be freed later on $2,500 bond.

Another neighbor said she was scared of the entire situation -- and the Walker family.

"We've been very scared of the dogs," said Tiffany Shaw. "But we're also scared of them, so we're really not sure what to do."

This happened in my neck of the woods.

The boxers were all white, and I'd bet money the dogs were deaf (so many white boxers are).

I have no idea why it took the attack of a child to get authorities to move on these dogs. They were a problem in the neighborhood before the attack.

The owner of the boxers were allowed to keep 3 of the dogs. Authorities took the rest and put them down.

I would have put both the owners and the dogs down.

I love boxers. My sister has some. I just hope it doesnt turn into a witch hunt like pittbulls. Bad dogs are bad dogs no matter what their breed.

UPDATE ON THIS STORY:

Just tonight Chance was released from Cook's Childrens Hospital to the care of CPS and is currently in foster care.

Both parents were KNOWN to CPS, and are Meth and Amphetamine users. According to CPS, it was not unusual for the parents to be asleep while Chance played around the house unsupervised.

Chance's grandma (not the one arrested above) wants to take custody of Chance, and apparently will fight for it.

Why the hell she didn't do this in the first place is beyond me. This was just a sick situation all the way around.

My heart just goes out to all children who live in such a fucked up family.

As a father and an owner of a Boxer, I can't help but get pissed off at people like this poor boy's "parents". No child or animal should suffer because of someones idiocy. I hope they lose their parental rights for good and also not be allowed to own any animal again.
