A man and woman were savagely attacked on board a tram by thugs who ridiculed them because of their Goth-style clothes.

A gang of three men shouted abuse at the friends as they waited at a Metrolink platform.

The victims, a man aged 29 and a woman of 22, were followed as they boarded a tram then viciously assaulted.

The woman was head-butted before one thug stamped on her face five times. She suffered a fractured eye socket.

Her friend was punched to the ground then kicked about the face and body as he lay injured between two seats of the tram.

Both were returning home from a bar in Bury at the time.

The horrific attack has chilling echoes of the murder in 2007 of Sophie Lancaster, a 20-year-old student who was kicked to death by a gang who targeted her in a park because she dressed in a Goth style. Sophie’s mother Sylvia Lancaster now campaigns to end intolerance and prejudice.

Mrs Lancaster said: “This is just the sort of ignorant behaviour that needs to be stopped. I am really pleased that these young people reported it to the police. Attacks and attitudes like this have no place in society.”

The friends – who have not been named – left the Showboat club on Clerke Street, Bury, and walked to the interchange in Bury town centre to get a tram to Prestwich.

The woman has told police that three men sitting on a bench on the platform directed comments towards them about their style of dress. The man suffered a black eye and an ear injury in the October 5 attack.

CCTV images of two of the suspects, both men believed to be aged in their 40s, have been released. All three men got off the tram after the attack and walked in the direction of Bury.

Det Con Simon Swann said: “This was a completely unprovoked and violent attack on two people who were returning home from an evening out.

“They have been left with serious injuries that have left them both in a lot of pain. The images are clear and we believe someone must know who they are.”
