Three schoolchildren were hurt when a kindergarten boy brought a loaded gun to his Houston elementary school children, officials said.

Reports said that the loaded gun fell from the boy's pocket while he sat down for lunch which accidentally started firing bullets at the Ross Elementary School cafeteria. Some of the bullet fragments hit the students, Houston Independent School District Assistant Police Chief Robert Mock.said.

"It dropped on the floor, under the table. It was loud, it was so loud," 6-year-old Kennedi Glapion said as she was being picked up from the school by her grandmother.

At least 42 kindergartens were having launch in the cafeteria when the incident happened. Kennedi said she was scared and started crying when she heard the loud gun shots.

Two 6-year-old boys were injured because of the incident, including the boy who brought the gun who was hurt in his foot, while the other boy sustained a bullet graze in his leg.

Sam Sarabia, the elementary school officer for the Houston school district added that a 5-year-old girl was also injured in her knee.

Sarabia added that a bullet might have injured the boy who had the gun while the other boy and the girl might have been hit by shrapnel.

Dr. David deLemos at the Texas Children's Hospital declared all the three children in stable condition and described them to be in good spirits.

The injured girl was identified by the police as Za'Keyah Thomas, and one of the injured boys as Khoran Brown, who was released from the hospital later Tuesday. The name of the boy who brought the gun was being held by investigators.

Houston police spokesman Victor Senties said the police is still investigating the incident and refused to divulge if charges will be filed.

HOUSTON - A 6-year-old child brought a loaded a gun to school. That fact is still puzzling to the boy’s father.

Marquell Sanders brought that gun to Betsy Ross Elementary Tuesday morning.

The gun fell out of his pocket during lunch period and went off, investigators said. At least 3 students, including Sanders, were struck by gunfire or grazed.

The children were transported to Texas Children's Hospital with minor injuries.

Marquis Sanders, Marquell’s father, said his son lives with his mother and he's not sure how the kindergartner got the gun.

"I never thought me or my son would be involved in something like this," he said.

School officials placed the school on lockdown and dismissed classes for the remainder of the day.

The Houston Independent School District is silent on what actions they will take against the 6-year-old, but HISD Elementary Schools Chief Sam Serabia said any child who brings a gun to class will face disciplinary action.

"We're asking our parents to watch what their children bring to school and take home from school," Serabia said.

Three hurt after Houston boy, 6, brings gun to school

Three young children in the US state of Texas have been injured after a gun brought to school by a six-year-old boy accidentally discharged.

The gun went off after falling from the boy's pocket, and three children were injured by fragments, police officials in the city of Houston said.

The children were taken on stretchers from Ross Elementary School. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Police said the child who brought the gun was among the injured.

The accident occurred in the school cafeteria about 1100 local time (1600 GMT).

Two six-year-old boys, including the one who brought in the gun, and a five-year-old girl were injured, all in the feet.

"Either some type of chips off the floor, or it could be pieces of the round that discharged," Houston Independent School District Assistant Police Chief Robert Mock said, describing the source of the injuries.

"They had some cuts and stuff on their legs, they don't appear to be life-threatening."

The children were sitting upright and appeared to be talking to emergency medical workers as they were brought from the school building, local television showed.

After the incident, parents rushed to the school to pick up the children.

"Being that this is an elementary school you would think that it would be safe, but now this makes you think nothing is safe," Shawn Dixon, 33, whose 10-year-old daughter Tyra is a student there, told the Associated Press.

Just an observation, all the children are African American, coincidence They do seem a little young to be headed down that path already.
