The family of a terminally ill 4-year-old boy finally got some good news Monday when they learned their son, Jayden Barber, is now in remission. The entire community, even folks from all around the world, have been praying for Jayden and his family. And while Jayden is not out of the woods just yet, those prayers were answered Monday. "There's never been another 4-year-old boy that had Ewing Sarcoma, that then had a transplant, that had d.l.j.'s. It's just never happened, so they don't have other people to write the books to look at. They're going to write the books after him," said Jayden's mom, Charlene Barber, on Wednesday. The community first learned of Jayden and his family in February, 2010. Jayden was at Akron Children's Hospital in Boardman battling bone cancer. One year later, Jayden's parents learned the chemotherapy for the first cancer had caused a second, different form of cancer called MDS leukemia and this time, it was attacking Jayden's blood and bone marrow. "He's the 20th person that's ever had it in the world. It is extremely rare," Charlene Barber said. Jayden got a bone marrow transplant in February from a female donor, but it was not working well enough. And July 19, doctors told Jayden's parents their son was terminally ill. "They told us at that point, they thought we had about five to six good weeks left, and then six months until completion, basically," Charlene said. From that point, the Barbers wanted to make Jayden's every wish come true. And thousands of friends, family and community members answered the call, helping send the Barbers and their puppy, Angel, to Myrtle Beach, and even Batman himself flying into Boardman's football stadium. Then on Monday, new test results showed Jayden's blood is 99.6 percent donor T-cells and he's in remission. His parents know there's still a long way to go for Jayden to live a long, healthy, cancer-free life, but finally, there is a small victory. "No matter what, we got more time, for sure, so that I'm ecstatic about. As long as he's comfortable, more time is awesome," Charlene said. Jayden Barber will celebrate his 5th birthday September 17. Charlene and Tim Barber said they've gotten this kind of news before. After the transplant, Jayden's blood tests were showing he was 99.8 percent donor cells. But 100 days later, that .2 percent of bad cells had spread and grown back to the point where doctors said he was terminal. The Barbers have a follow up appointment Thursday at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland. Re: Terminally Ill 4 Year Old Who Met Batman in Remission
I'll have to think of the Batman Theme whenever I want to accomplish something now! I'm happy for him! I love happy endings, especially for children! They have enough to deal with when they get old and have to deal with reality! |
