Teen Dies While Saying Facebooking and Driving Isn't Safe

I never liked facebook, if I want to socialize I'll do it in person. Nor would I ever presume that my life is so important to other people that they would want constant updates about what I'm doing. This is a prime example of what that'll get you.

Idaho – Parents of the teen who died while texting and driving are fighting to have laws instated in Idaho to prevent similar accidents.

On January 14, 18-year-old Taylor Sauer was driving from the Utah State University campus to visit her parents in Idaho. During this late-night, four hour drive, Sauer was texting a friend on Facebook about the Denver Broncos.

While driving 80 mph down I-84 she sent a final text that read: “I can’t discuss this now. Driving and facebooking is not safe! Haha.” Moments after sending that text she would plow into the back of a tanker truck that was going 15 mph up a hill. Police say Taylor never hit the brakes and was killed instantly.

Ever since her death her parents, Clay and Shauna Sauer, have been trying to get texting while driving banned in Idaho, one of the 13 states in the U.S. that has laws against it.

The state has turned down texting while driving bills before because they say they already have an inattentive driving law that covers texting.

The Sauers counter that this is only effective if police actually witness a driver texting. They feel that an actual law against texting while driving will help future generations of kids not unlike seatbelt laws that were often met with resistance when they were first introduced.

“We all fought against seat belts, (but) now, everybody wears seat belts. The kids will be trained and learn from a young age that they can’t text and drive,” Clay told Ann Curry on TODAY.

I feel bad for the parents, I truly do. I also feel this law will pass but I just don’t see the point. She obviously knew what she was doing was dangerous so I am not sure how a law would helped prevent what happened anymore than the speed limit kept her from speeding.

Re: Teen Dies While Saying Facebooking and Driving Isn't Safe

The sucky thing is that a lot of places have had inattentive/distracted driving laws for years but it doesn't deter people and it's hard to enforce. I doubt a no texting law would have saved her life, but I can appreciate that her parents don't want her death to be in vain. In the end, people are going to do what they want to do behind the wheel whether it endangers themselves or someone else

Re: Teen Dies While Saying Facebooking and Driving Isn't Safe

Well..i agree with the cops. There is already a law against it, and what difference would it make? I mean recently here in the UK they've cracked down on using your phone whilst driving but they can only do anything if they see you using it. People still do.

It only really helps because if you are involved in an accident the police seize your phone and check it for recent use, so they can use it in prosecution.

Re: Teen Dies While Saying Facebooking and Driving Isn't Safe

I think they should have something in phones that prevents texts to be sent if the phone is shown to be moving over 10mph or whatever that is in kph

I'm American. Superior measurement system and all.

Re: Teen Dies While Saying Facebooking and Driving Isn't Safe

Maybe this story should be a mandatory reading in all the schools of the world, i'm sorry for her parent. Anyway, if someone needs to be forced by laws to don't text while driving rather than figuring it out by him/herself, then there's something VERY wrong with him/her, wtf. It reminds me of when helmets became mandatory for <125 CC motorcycles, in my country. Many people kept NOT wearing them for years, as if the head of the asshole riding the motorcycle belonged to somebody else. Come on, a 18 Y.O. human life lost for texting about football is something beyond my ability to understand/accept.
