Tainted Meat Seized
RIPLEY COUNTY, Ind. -- Indiana State Police said troopers seized tainted meat found in a delivery truck with a broken refrigeration unit. Late Friday morning, Trooper Chris Richey said he stopped a 2000 Hino box truck for a routine commercial vehicle inspection near Lammers Pike in Batesville. Richey said he found out the refrigeration unit was broken. According to driver Alejandro Gonzalez. 41, of Louisville, the unit hadn't been working right for the last four days. The truck was loaded with chicken, seafood, pork, eggs, noodles and mushrooms, and the contents were bound for various restaurants in Batesville, Greensburg, Shelbyville, Indianapolis, and Mooresville, state police said. When Trooper Clifton Elston, of the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, weighed the truck, he said it was about 5,000 pounds overweight. Elston said he also checked the temperature in the back of the truck and discovered it was just about 70 degrees. Investigators said the truck was owned by Heng Hua, Inc. out of Cincinnati and Louisville. The Ripley County Health Department said officers seized about 2,000 pounds of perishable food. The vehicle was owned by Heng Hua, Inc. out of Cincinnati and Louisville, Ky. Richey said he stopped another vehicle on August 8 owned by Heng Hua, Inc. According to Richey, he truck also had an improperly working refrigeration unit, and the RCHD seized one case of clams and one case of cauliflower for not being maintained at a safe temperature. This is a widespread problem. If the owners had pulled the trucks in for service it would have cut into their profits and they can't have that.  |
