Re: Students Call for Prisons to Be BANNED
There is no rehabilitation. It keeps them away from us. I don't care what color, persuasion, ethnicity, political party or I.Q. Prison is to say, "You lose your freedom." If you don't learn from this or if you are a true "Dick" stay there.

Re: Students Call for Prisons to Be BANNED
Prison isn't about punishing criminals. It's about protecting the innocent. So I agree that only the violent crims should be imprisoned, in order to protect society. The rest? Plenty of better things for someone who smoked a bit of pot to be doing. Put them to work in a bakery making brownies... or something. |

Re: Students Call for Prisons to Be BANNED
People having no clue who is locked up is a major problem. I don't know about the UK, but in the US we typically keep almost half a million people incarcerated that aren't even convicted of crimes yet... just awaiting trial and court dates. We have about 2.5 million inmates, with over half of federal and about 1/5th of state inmates incarcerated for non-violent drug offenses. Adding up all those incarcerated comes to about a full 1% of the US population, which is over twice the number that typically serves as active duty military men and women. When they talk about prisons being racist, they are referring to some interesting trends: Blacks are more likely to be stopped and searched, but less likely to be caught with paraphernalia or evidence. Blacks and Whites use and sell drugs at comparable rates, but blacks are not only convicted at higher rates but given longer sentences even when all other controls are accounted for. These people aren't just making up slogans because they think it sounds cool. We have a real problem with how our judicial system operates. |
