The men died in the same day after being gored in two Spanish towns at opposite ends of the country.

Two men have died within hours of each other after being gored by bulls during Spanish festivals.

Martin Caballero, a 43-year-old father, was killed in the town of Coria on Wednesday, while another man, in his late 70s, died the same day after being attacked in a nearby town.

Officials said Mr Caballero was taking part in a traditional part of the ceremony where a crowd surrounds a bull in an open-air theatre, goading the animal before running behind vertical metal barriers.

He was standing behind a protective fence at the bullring on Wednesday when the bull charged.

One of the bull's horns went between the barrier bars, piercing the man's abdomen and chest.

He suffered a 30 centimetre - nearly 12 inches - wound when the bull plunged its left horn into his stomach. The animal then gored him twice near the groin.

Mr Caballero, who had a 17-year-old son, also suffered a severe head injury when he hit the road.

Onlookers held their heads in their hands as they realised how serious his injuries were.

Paramedics were pictured rushing him away from the scene on a stretcher - his shirt covered in blood - but he died while he was being operated on in hospital.

The tragedy happened at a festival in Coria in the western province of Caceres near Spain's border with Portugal, around 8.30pm yesterday.

The bull that gored him was named today as Guapeton - Handsome Boy in Spanish.

Flags were flown at half mast outside the town hall in neighbouring Moraleja where Mr Caballero came from.

A minute’s silence was due to be held this afternoon at a full council meeting.

Today it emerged a second man died the same day as Mr Caballero after being gored by a bull with fireworks attached to its horns for a festival in Ampolla in the eastern Spanish province of Tarragona.

The old man, who was a bull aficionado, had travelled to the town with his grandchildren to watch the 'toro embolado' spectacle on Monday, according to El Pais.

In this gruesome tradition, a bull's horns are covered in tar, set alight and then the enraged animal is either tied up in a public square or left to run blazing through the town.

Ampolla’s mayor Francesc Arasa said the bull gored him twice and although no vital organs were affected, he lost an important amount of blood.

Moraleja mayor Cesar Herrero said he had passed his condolences on to the dead man's family.

Video footage of the incident was posted online by some Spanish news websites.

It showed the man was gored with such force that he was pushed up against the ceiling of the spectators’ area, before the bull twisted to gore him twice more.

It was the first death during the festival in the town on the Portuguese border since 2007.

This isn't news. It's pretty common for people to die after they've been gored by a bull. It's kind of expected, really.

Now, if you told me that delicious candy fell out of these guys after the bulls impaled them, then THAT would be news.
