Looks like he is off to that deluxe apartment in the sky in a big way:

Sherman Hemsley, the actor who made cranky George Jefferson on The Jeffersons unforgettable, has died in his El Paso home, TMZ and local media are reporting. He was 74.

The cause of death was unclear but TMZ cited anonymous sources who said it appeared to be natural causes. TMZ said he was discovered by his nurse, who first thought he was sleeping.

Hemsley did not have a wife or children.

Hemsley, who first played George Jefferson on All in the Family, became a star with the successful spinoff The Jeffersons. He was among the small number of black actors who pioneered leading roles in successful sitcoms. He also played Deacon Ernest Frye on Amen.

no wife or children? thats sad.. I hope that wasnt his real personality on the show.. he looked like a horrible person to live with, but i'd understand why no wife or children.

You must be a baby. His show and one called, "All in the Family", and, "Sanford & Son", pushed the racist jokes to the limit! Sherman was not in, "Sanford & Son". That was Redd Foxx.

They were way ahead of their time. They still run if you have any of the oldies tv channels.

Looking back, it's hard to believe people thought that way and some still do!

A baby? I am 40 and I have never heard of either of those shows.
