Separation of Conjoined Twins in Peru Called a "Miracle"

Two baby girls who shared a liver have been separated by doctors in Lima, Peru. The three-month-olds are recovering a month after the surgery, which took more than 30 medical staff eight hours to complete. Orfelinda Vasquez Sanchez and Segundo Vargas Fuentes are expected to recover fully but will need monitoring throughout their lives

Doctors in Peru are hopeful conjoined twin girls who share a liver can be separated. Forty per cent of conjoined twins are stillborn or die at birth, and a further third die within 24 hours.

But surgeons say this pair's healthy weight makes survival more likely. The girls, currently in intensive care in a Lima hospital, share just one organ – the liver – which makes the operation less complex.

Sharing a liver doesn't seem too bad though, the liver can regenerate, live people donate parts of their liver all the time.
