A 16-year-old girl has been charged with criminal homicide in the drowning death of her newborn baby boy.

Angela Lightcap gave birth to the baby in the bathroom of her home on Creek Road in Greenwich Twp., Berks Co. on Jan. 9, 2012, according to court documents obtained by 69 News.

Lightcap used a pair of kitchen shears to cut the umbilical cord and then cleaned off herself and the baby in the bathtub, officials said.

Lightcap told investigators that, shortly after getting out of the tub, the baby was no longer breathing and that she did not attempt to revive the baby or summon help. Instead, officials said she wrapped the baby in a towel and a bed sheet and placed him in a trash can.

"It's a very very troubling case," said Berks County District Attorney John Adams.

That evening, authorities said Lightcap was transported by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown for treatment of bleeding, at which time hospital personnel discovered the cut umbilical cord and contacted state police to inform them that Lightcap was concealing the birth of a child.

Lightcap told the hospital staff that she had a miscarriage and flushed the baby down the toilet, officials said.

Hospital staff told police that, based on the size of the umbilical cord, the baby would have been too large to flush and advised them to search the home.

A search that evening, investigators said, led them to find the baby in a trash can in Lightcap's bedroom.

A forensic examination determined the baby was alive and breathing when he was born and that his gestation age was between 36 and 38 weeks. The coroner ruled the baby's death a homicide caused by drowning.

Lightcap subsequently told investigators that she learned in late spring 2011 that she was pregnant and hid the pregnancy from her family and friends, according to court documents. Lightcap said she discussed options with the baby's father and the two agreed to have an abortion, however, authorities said she missed the window for terminating the pregnancy.

The baby's father told investigators that, sometime around November, Lightcap told him not to worry about the baby and that she'd take care of it by taking pills and alcohol to terminate the pregnancy.

Lightcap, a student at Kutztown High School, has been charged as an adult with criminal homicide and concealing the death of a child, said D.A. Adams, who added that Lightcap's attorney may file a motion have the case heard in juvenile court.

"Any juvenile who is charged with murder, criminal homicide, under the law must be charged as an adult," Adams said.
