Re: Santa Fe School Shooting

Not really. Overdoses, hangings, cuttings, automobile related suicides, would sky-rocket, and we'll be left with an illusion that gun-related suicides were a fix, with gun control, since we can't call it such.
I don’t think so. Suicide is transient, delaying access to firearms definitely could reduce suicide rates. That’s not to say the same person that can’t get a gun wouldn’t hang themselves etc.. if they were determined to end it they’d find a way, of course they would. Unfortunately though a lot of suicidal people don’t actually want to die.

I used to feel the same as you @kanda, but I’m torn now..I still like to advocate for elderly people and assisted end of life options but it makes me a bit of a hypocrite if I deny the same right to someone so mentally unwell that they seek the same end..

Anyhoo.. ethical debate not ideal in a current events thread.

Really isn't enough research to back the idea that gun bans, or absents of guns, would reduce suicides across the board. Logic would suggest it would lower it, but significant enough to start stripping rights of those that are not suicidal?

I believe that people that turn a gun to their mouth knows ahead of time they're ready to go, and will just find any means possible to get the job done, in the absents of them. A gun isn't exactly an attention seeking tool. Plenty of attention seekers will down a dozen pills, whilst having a gun in the closet.

Re: Santa Fe School Shooting

The argument that alcohol, drugs, auto accidents and anything else cause deaths so might as well ban everything is the most ridiculous kindergarten argument I've ever heard anyone use.

Can vehicles cause deaths? Yes. Are they designed to do so? No.

Do drugs cause deaths? Yes. Do people go into public places and shove cocaine and heroin down peoples throats to induce mass overdose against others? No.

Do knives kill people? Yes. Are they designed to kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time possible? No.

Do high powered rifles kill people? Yes. Are they designed to kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time possible? YES.

And your argument fell back into pre-school.

Substance, such as what you listed above, generally can lead people to use a car, a knife, hell, even a gun- to harm other people.

A gun is designed for responsible users, rather to kill people, protect people, property, country, or self. Much like everything else you listed (even drugs and alcohol ) is subjected to be used wrongfully regardless of design, by irresponsible users/owners.

when an item isnt designed to kill...yet still ends up killing far more than an item designed to kill....that doesnt equate to 'the first item is safer since it wasnt designed to kill'. the opposite, in fact, is true.
