Video of millionaire in fatal crash sparks outrage

MOSCOW - Russian media aired a video showing a collision between a millionaire businessman in a Mercedes and a 24-year-old man on a motorbike, who died at the scene, prompting outrage on Friday.

In the accident on August 27 on a highway west of Moscow, supermarket founder Alexander Zaribko tried to overtake a motorbike ridden by Stanislav Lopatkin, LifeNews website reported, posting a video of the incident.

Zaribko is a founder of a chain of supermarkets called Viktoria.

According to Forbes magazine, he owned a 29-per cent stake in the enterprise, valued at 20 billion rubles (S$827 million) before it was sold earlier this year.

The video filmed by a dashboard camera on another car shows the driver apparently changing lanes at high speed, colliding with the biker and throwing him onto the hard shoulder before continuing without slowing down.

Investigators "believe that they don't have any reason to launch a case", said spokeswoman for the investigative committee in the Moscow region, Oksana Shlyakhtina, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

A police spokesman told RIA-Novosti: "Our investigators have ruled that there are no grounds for criminal charges against Zaribko."

The incident caused outrage among Russian bloggers and bikers, who viewed it as yet another case where a wealthy offender escapes justice.

"In the battle between money and video evidence, money will always win," one blogger identified as silentiy, who described himself as a 26-year-old biker wrote on Livejournal.

However some bloggers wrote that motorcyclists tend to change lanes quickly and speed between cars with disregard for their own safety.

According to a report from The Moscow Times, the regional police has declined to press charges against the millionaire.

1- The saloon, a Mercedes S-class, switched to the leftmost overtaking lane, reportedly without turning on its signal lights. The motorcyclist, pictured at the car's side, was caught unaware.

Road accidents involving senior officials and businessmen have become hot topics in the Russian blogosphere.
In the most notorious case, last year an executive in Russia's largest private oil company Lukoil was involved in a crash in his chauffeur-driven Mercedes that killed the two women in the other vehicle.
Investigators claimed the driver of the second car was guilty and closed the probe due to her death, but the authorities reopened the case in July at the request of the dead woman's relatives.

Former Russian Official's Daughter Walks Free After Road Death Trial

IRKUTSK, Russia -- The daughter of a former Russian official has been given a suspended sentence for causing a road accident that killed one person, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Anna Shavenkova, the daughter of a former regional election commission head, was found guilty of causing the December 2009 traffic accident at the heart of the case.

Driving at speed, she lost control of her car, which mounted a sidewalk and hit two sisters, Yelena and Yulia Pyatkova. The elder sister, Yelena, later died in hospital, while the younger sister, Yulia, was severely injured.
The court in Irkutsk in southwestern Siberia found Shavenkova guilty of manslaughter and handed down a 2 1/2-year prison sentence suspended for 14 years. She was also stripped of her driving license for three years.
Shavenkova said today in court she was "very sorry for what happened."
A representative for the victims commented after the verdict was pronounced that "there is no justice in Russia."

rich person vs the motorcycle... i guess his innocence or guilt depends on the laws of operating a motor vehicle in russia. is it legal to switch lanes without checking to see if the lane is clear before entering? is it legal to leave a scene of an accident? perhaps the answer to both is yes. but i highly doubt it. or perhaps the answer to both is yes if ones vision is obstructed by what is known as eye buckitis. below is a picture of a case of eye buckitis. you can clearly see how it limits the vision. people with this condition usually have chauffeurs and should not be allowed behind the wheel. not only does eye buckitis limit the persons vision, it also tends to effect their mental capacities for reasoning when it comes to what is important and what is not.

Of course, candymosh2, money talks an international language. What I find somehow disturbing is the fact that in these three cases, corroborated by solid proofs, witnesses, and under some huge public opinion pressure, the authorities didn't even care to hide/cover it up/find some excuse: they just decided to don't punish them, and did it in the full light of day. IMHO, russians should be very concerned about it, but I may be wrong.
