Egg-cellent: Rosie laid this egg speckled with white dots on the same day that snow fell

She may not boast the perma-tan or slick presentation skills of your average television weather forecaster.
But, according to her owners, Rosie the hen is every bit as accurate when it comes to predicting if it will rain or shine.
Without the need for highly technical computer graphics, Rosie shows off her somewhat surprising talent using what comes naturally to her – the markings on her eggs.
So, as seen this week, a day of clear skies and sunny spells in her home town of Maidenhead, Berkshire, was foretold by one pale clear egg and one with orange spots.
Last week, hours before the snow began, she produced an example with white speckles resembling snowflakes.
And two gloriously sunny days were both predicted by eggs with indented marks in the shape of a shining sun.
Owner Sacha Anderson, a 30-year-old office PA, said: ‘When she began laying these eggs, I couldn’t believe it. It just seemed like magic.
‘In August the eggs had strange sun rays on them, and those were some of the hottest days of the year. Last week they had a speckled appearance I had never seen before, just like snowflakes, and then we had a snowfall.
‘My children started running around and were really excited, saying: “Rosie can tell the weather”.
‘It’s happened quite a few times now. She would probably give the Met Office a run for its money. I don’t watch the television weather news now. When you’ve got Rosie why bother?’
The Andersons bought the Maran breed hen from a farm shop in July as a present for children Ella, eight, and Curtis, six.


Last night author Charlotte Popescu, an expert on chickens, said: ‘I have never before come across a chicken that can forecast the weather.
‘Generally the appearance of a chicken’s egg has more to do with its breed. However, if an octopus can predict the football results, then who knows.’
