So so sad I loved this guy growing up my favourite comedic actor

The British comedy icon - best known for his roles in The Young Ones, Bottom and The New Statesman - passed away today (June 9), his management company has confirmed.

A statement from Mayall's management, Brunskill, said: "We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Rik Mayall who passed away this morning.

"We will be issuing a further statement in the fullness of time."

A Scotland Yard spokesman said officers were called by London Ambulance Service to a house in Barnes, south-west London at around 1.20pm, where "a man, aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene". He added that the death is not believed to be suspicious.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman also stated that they had been called to the house at 12.07pm.

So sad .love this geezer...my uncle missed his ferry once from France. Then bumped into rik.they got smashed together

Unknown atm, police say nothing suspicious...I think his friends think it may be related to his quad bike accident 16 years ago...He had periods of fitting apparently and some heart damage.

I loved watching Rik in "The Young Ones" both back in the '80s and now on DVD with my son. I was saddened to hear of his passing. The DVD box-set is great and well worth the price.

For those of you not familiar with TYO, here's one of my favorite scenes with Rik playing "Rick" in the episode titled "Bambi". (If you want to see the entire episode, which includes a sweet Motörhead cameo, here's , Part 2, and Part 3.)

Back in the day, before torrents, set top boxes and even VCRs,The Young Ones was shown here in New Zealand on Friday nights and it was the only programme that you stopped drinking at the pub to go home and watch.
