Here’s what happens when you lock horns with a bison.
The one-ton beast charged Ty Draper after he had tried to shoo it off a path used by runners in an annual race.
After ramming its victim into the fence, the bison trotted off, leaving marshall Ty, 50, shaken but unharmed at Antelope Island State Park in Utah.
The frantic moment was captured by keen photographer Wayne Ebenroth, 38.
Wayne, from Boise, Idaho, said: “The bison was standing on the road where runners were going to be running on in just a few minutes from the time of the incident.
“Rather than letting the bison just head off at its own pace, the man tried hurrying it up by supposedly shaking the fence which clearly annoyed the bison.
“Suddenly it turned around and charged towards the man pinning him against the fence and after holding him there for a couple of seconds threw him to the ground and trotted off.
“I think the man kind of leaned against the fence in the hope the bison wouldn’t hit him - perhaps he was thinking if he ran he would be more likely to get trampled if the bison chased him.
“But whatever he did worked because after being thrown to the ground the guy took a couple of seconds to get back up, held his hand up to someone near me that shouted ‘are you okay?’ and yelled back that he was fine.
“After that he squatted back down and took another picture or two before walking back towards his two friends.
“Once the guy who was hit seemed at a safe distance I turned to the two of my five kids that were standing with me and said ‘that’s why you don’t mess with the bison’.
“We were there because my wife was running so I had headed about a fifth of a mile up from the start to get some shots of the runners coming.
“I was just warming up my camera and decided the three guys hanging out close to the bison would be a good subject to make sure I was getting clean shots.
“It was quite lucky I happened to be in the right place at the right time.”
Local bison rancher Glenn Marshall said: “This shows why it’s a good idea just to give them their space.”
