Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, has died at the age of 96.

Prince Charles, 73, heir to the throne since the age of three, is now king, and will be officially proclaimed so at St James’s Palace in London as soon as practicably possible.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Flags on landmark buildings in Britainwere being lowered to as a period of official mourning was announced.

As Queen of the UK and 14 other realms, and head of the 54-nation Commonwealth, Elizabeth II was easily the world’s most recognisable head of state during an extraordinarily long reign.

Not exactly accurate. She served as a consistent touchstone for her people over the years, investing the masses with a sense that at least SOMEONE in the bureaucracy was in touch with them, and she pretty much kept a cool poker face even during her Annus Horribilis.

It's true that the British Monarchy pretty much does nothing nowadays, but she earned her wings through seven decades of faithful service to the people. R.I.P.

The amount of hours she worked for loads of charities are immensely. The influence she had and the good she’s done all through the commonwealth and especially the U.K, she loved so much, can’t be measured. She deteriorated after her husband died last year so hopefully they're together again in the afterlife.

The monarch is just a figurehead . All the heavy lifting is done by appointed officials, and all the king or queen has to do is grin and bear it
