Prosecutor: Girl Abused for Months Before Death
SAN DIEGO — A San Diego mother, who prosecutors say violently abused her 9-year-old daughter for 17 months before fatally beating her, pleaded not guilty to murder at her arraignment Wednesday. Judge Joseph Brannigan set bail 25-year-old Crystal Cardenas at $2 million. Deputy District Attorney Lindsey Krause told Brannigan that Cardenas began abusing her daughter, Elizabeth Holloway, shortly after the girl came to live with her. "Elizabeth came to live with the defendant about 17 months before her death," said San Diego Deputy District Attorney Lindsey Krause. "The investigation uncovered that the victim endured numerous incidences of child abuse over that period." During that time, the child endured abuse from her mother that included being choked, punched, kicked, burned and thrown on the ground, the prosecutor alleged. Holloway died from blunt force trauma on Jan. 17. "A few days before her death, the defendant had punched and kicked Elizabeth," said Krause. "The medical examiner's office found her (Elizabeth) to have received a bruised pancreas and received a transection of her intestines." "This would have resulted in a very slow and painful death to this 9-year-old little girl,'' the prosecutor said outside court. Holloway experienced vomiting and loss of feeling in her lower extremities and even told her 7-year-old half-sister that she felt like she was going to die, the prosecutor said. Krause said the District Attorney's office concluded Cardenas caused the injury after a thorough investigation by police. "That included interviewing the family, extended family, neighbors, former neighbors and people at the school she attended," Lt. Kevin Rooney. "We determined it was her mother." Cardenas has two other children, a girl. 7, and a boy, 1. They are under the care of county Child Protective Services. Cardenas faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted of murder. A preliminary hearing has been set for Feb. 16. |

Oh yeah they interviewed a bunch of people, and they all probably fucking knew, but nobody called social services. :(

I find it hard to believe that the child was abused for a 17 month period and nobody knew what was going on, I call bullshit.
