Principal Reassigned After School Sign is Misspelled

By Dylan Stableford

Yahoo News

December 18, 2014

The sign above the entryway to Public School 20 in Paterson, NJ.

A principal has been reassigned after a misspelled sign was displayed for more than a week outside a New Jersey public high school.

The message on the sign above the entryway to Paterson’s Public School Number 20 included three mistakes: December was spelled "Dicember," report as "reepor" and a "1" was placed backwards.

The errors drew the ire of school Paterson Board of Education member Corey Teague, who saw a photo of the misspelled sign on Facebook.

“At first I didn’t believe it," Teague told CBS New York. "I thought it was Photoshopped or something."

When Teague found out it was real, he shared the photo on Facebook.

"How can we expect our children to learn how to spell when the administration can't?" Teague wrote. "We must be held to a higher standard.”

“We can’t assume because it’s an urban district — inner-city — that things like this can be swept over," he told the CBS affiliate. "If it were a suburban neighborhood, parents would be outraged."

School officials told NJ.com that the lettering, "was placed by a custodian and the sign was near an entrance not normally used by staff." It was later corrected.

After the gaffe was picked up by several local news outlets, Antoinette Young, the school's principal, was reassigned as a vice principal at a different school.

The school district did not disclose the reason for her demotion, but according to NorthJersey.com, Young was already under review for unrelated performance issues.

Not everyone agreed with the reassignment.

“They don’t talk about all the good things she’s done with the kids," Linda Martinez told CBS New York. "We’re sad to see her go."

Young did not return an email seeking comment. She is still listed as principal on the school's website.

Young had worked as the principal for School 20 for almost two years, making $108,000 at the start of this school year. It is unclear whether the demotion brings a pay cut.

Her name is listed under the school's motto: "Proper Planning Promotes Success; Failure Is Not An Option!"

I'm tired of seeing typos all over the place. Last week, our news had a school spelled as whatever univeristy! It never used to be every week or more!

Re: Principal Reassigned After School Sign is Misspelled

Sad here in the US. Schools are putting out illiterates.

I have no children, but, my great niece isn't taught cursive since 3rd grade nor has her spelling been checked.

The new principal is using a method by someone named Gentry. No clue who he or she is.

My niece's attitude is, "The teacher just wants us to finish our homework. She doesn't care if it's right or wrong."

Sickens me and makes me sad and disgusted!

I really doubt parents would be "outraged" in suburbia.

cursive is becoming less and less valid so expect it to be phased out...keyboard proficiency is replacing it..

only old people still use cursive..

So, no one signs their name anymore

My writing is a combination of both.

My niece wanted to learn it because her teacher writes homework assignments in cursive. I found her some stencils.

Re: Principal Reassigned After School Sign is Misspelled

i think a signature is a little different....but for general writing it's falling by the wayside....it's difficult to read...

i haven't written in cursive since 1990 personally...i remember when and how i made the decision to stop using it

Re: Principal Reassigned After School Sign is Misspelled

Dare I say that all these word abbreviations I see being "hip" lately to say like Tots, Spec (Special), Lol could be harmless ugly fashion that we need not 'adapt' to. Or, could it be just that century by century change in language that occurs naturally?

It's just that I've seen a lot of people using it in writing. Time will tell.

that won't stick around... it's a remnant of when cell phones were still fairly new and SMS was the preferred method of communicating...SMS' cost money so to squeeze as much wording as possible into a message people started abbreviating things...

it' still fairly common back home in South Africa among the black population...

our language in 100 years will be totally different to what it is today...interesting topic...
