A pregnant Sudanese doctor has been sentenced to death after refusing to recant her Christian faith.

Meriam Ibrahim Ishag was born to a Muslim father but married a Christian man in 2011.

The 26-year-old, who is eight months pregnant and has an 18-month-old son, was convicted of apostasy – or renouncing her faith – by a court in Khartoum.

‘We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged to death,’ Judge Abbas al-Khalifa told her.

He also ordered her to be given 100 lashes. Earlier in the hearing, she calmly told the judge: ‘I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy.’

The sentence will not be carried out until her unborn child is at least two years old.

Fifty people demonstrated against the sentences and her lawyers will appeal.

‘The fact a woman has been sentenced to death for her religious choice, and to flogging for being married to a man of an allegedly different religion, is abhorrent,’ said Amnesty International.

‘Adultery and apostasy are acts which should not be considered crimes at all.’

The British, US and Canadian embassies have called on Sudan to respect her right to change her faith.

i dont think most 'choose' to live there. it's hard to just 'walk away' from what you know. most people consider where they grew up to be their 'home'. i dont feel that way but most seem to...and it's hard for them to leave, if they even have the resources to leave in the first place (most do not)

most of these people are uneducated and have been indoctrinated to follow a faith since they were children... i dont know that they fully understand what the rest of the world truly has to offer and if they do, im not sure they have the means to get out of the situation they are in.

i mean, let's be real here... if it were easy to walk away from poverty or from horrible political situations, there wouldnt be any poverty or horrible political situations. it's far more reasonable to ask those that do have resources why they are not helping more....

that would be social darwinism... which i dont agree with.

to me (and i mean no offense by this.. this is just one stoner's opinion....) "to think in this way is to fail to reason honestly, or to care sufficiently about the suffering of other human beings."

people born in an environment without adequate opportunities for education are at a disadvantage... they are still humans though, capable of learning and capable of suffering. to me, the idea that many have that should be no desire 'to help those who don't have the drive to help themselves' is selfishness derived from a solipsistic mentality. this kind of thinking (imho) is devoid of morality.

social darwinism has no room for altruism....this, to me, is a disgusting way to apply darwinian principles. if people really believed that 'survival of the fittest' was the way to run a society, they should try abolish health care all together....or (my preference) lead by example and never ask for any assistance of any kind from anybody....really see how far their philosophy takes them

Personally, I think we need to cut ties, stop aide etc to any country that participates in Sharia law. The ones who practice it are cavemen at best. There is no reasoning with them and they are not even worthy of being on this planet.

The people that live there, who practice and believe it in, I have no use for.

The people who live there, want a way out, and have no choice, I feel for.

Personally, NO religion is worth dying for. As a MOTHER, a pregnant one at that, this stupid bitch needs to claim Muslim faith (regardless of her christian beliefs) as her own and deal with the hand she is dealt for the time being. Move the fuck out of that god awful country and make a better life for her children. Anyone who refuses to do so, gets what they deserve.
She is a doctor, she has a means to perhaps get out, if she follows their rules for a bit.
