A Polish five-time World’s Strongest Man champion wants to introduce migrants to his baseball bat — a sentiment that now has him in the sights of Poland’s prosecutor’s office.

Mariusz Pudzianowski posted a Facebook picture of a baseball bat with the comment that he would await refugees gathered in Calais on a ferry to prepare them for an “accelerated lesson in assimilation.” The January post was liked by over 27,000 people.

The 142-kilogram athlete owns a transport business and has been denouncing the damage refugees in Calais are doing to his trucks. Thousands of migrants are trying to smuggle themselves into Britain, often by sneaking onto trucks headed across the channel.

Pudzianowski called them “human garbage,” accusing them of vandalizing his trucks and threatening drivers with knives. He said on his company’s Facebook page that he’s simply trying to defend his property.

“I know migrants and refugees who live in Poland — they’re normal people who behave like civilized people,” he wrote. “But if someone behaves like an animal, whether in Poland or abroad, I’ll react.”

That outraged Hejtstop, an NGO fighting homophobia, anti-Semitism and racism in Poland. The organization issued a complaint, and the authorities launched an investigation. If the muscleman is charged and convicted of violating Poland’s law banning racial or religious hatred, he could face up to two years in prison.

Pudzianowski insists he is simply expressing his views, and in a Facebook post called Joanna Garbarczyk, the campaign coordinator at Hejtstop, a “problematic and frustrated woman who is harming normal people” — illustrated with a picture of Grabarczyk surrounded by offensive messages.

Hejtstop has launched its own — tamer — social media campaign saying it was prepared to use “appropriate legal steps” to defend Grabarczyk.
