Police Take Hamster Into Protective Custody

Officers in Oregon, pulled over a car in the early hours of Tuesday morning because they believed the driver to be impaired, Beaverton police spokesman Mike Rowe said.

After a chat with the driver, 27-year-old Nicole Huey, the policemen realised that she was harbouring a hamster on her lap.

She got out of the vehicle, placing her pet on the dashboard, and was arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants.

The hamster, whose name is not known, was allowed to roam free inside the vehicle and it took three officers to capture the energetic rodent.

Huey maintained that she had been taking a trip to the shop, although why she chose to take her furry friend along for the ride remains a mystery.
However, it appears that Huey was not all that attached to her unorthodox driving companion. She told police that she did not have anyone who could come collect the hamster, so they should 'just kill it'.
Police have confirmed that the hamster will not be harmed, contrary to the wishes of its owner.
'A lesson to learn from this incident, other than do not drink and drive, is it is not safe to operate a motor vehicle with any type of animal on your lap,' Rowe advised.
