BREAKING NEWS: Police officers shoot dead 23-year-old black suspect in St Louis who 'charged at cops with a knife'
A 23-year-old African-American man has been shot dead today by police officers in St Louis, Missouri after allegedly robbing a convenience store with a knife.
The man charged at officers waving a knife when he was killed around 12.30pm in the north of the city, Police Chief Sam Dotson said on Tuesday.
The shooting took place outside the Six Stars Market, four miles from the unrest in Ferguson over last week's cop shooting of a black teenager.
No officers were injured in today's incident. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect stole two energy drinks, according to KMOV, left the store but then returned to take a pastry.
Fox reported that the man, described as behaving 'erratically', got into a dispute with the owner who called 911.
When police arrived, the man reportedly shouted: 'Shoot me, kill me now.'
The 23-year-old was holding the knife in an overhand grip, the police chief said today.
The officers left their patrol car without their weapons drawn and warned the man multiple times to drop the weapon.
However when the man charged at them with the knife raised and was within three or four feet, they opened fire and killed him.
Chief Dotson waded into the crowd today to share more details about the police's initial investigation, in an apparent effort to calm tensions.
A large crowd had gathered at the scene with some chanting 'hands up, don't shoot', a refrain that has been heard in Ferguson following the Michael Brown shooting.
A heavy police presence was on the scene cordoning off the area with crime scene tape and blocking intersections with patrol vehicles.
The cop shooting on Tuesday comes ten days after a police officer in a St Louis suburb shot dead an unarmed teenager.
Officer Darren Wilson fired at least six shots at 18-year-old Michael Brown on August 9 in Ferguson.
Tensions boiled over for the ninth night in Ferguson on Monday with 78 arrests made - the majority for people refusing to disperse when ordered by police.
A heavy police presence was on the scene cordoning off the area with crime scene tape and blocking intersections with patrol vehicles.

Yep if he charged the policeman with a knife there should be no issues with this shooting but something tells me that there will be. This is just going to add fuel to the situation in Ferguson But it shouldn't

When exactly did being black become a free pass to attack police officers? The logic on display here seems to be that white police officers aren't allowed to use deadly force in self-defense if the threat to their person happens to be black. Is aggression against law enforcement personnel now just as a much an inscrutable part of "black culture" as street gang warfare and sagging pants?

So what exactly should one do when charged at by a knife-wielding asshole? I'd love to hear any one of those protesters' ideas of what would constitute a "reasonable" response under such circumstances. Maybe things would be different were their lives the ones on the line?

Sounds to me like personal responsibility for one's own actions is the truly offensive notion here.
