Sumter, S.C., police officer Gaetano Acerra reached out to Cameron Simmons, 13, after the boy called police following a fight with his mother. Simmons told the officer he didn't want to live there anymore.

Acerra learned Simmons suffered from back pain because he slept on an air mattress that deflated during the night. And the boy had almost no other bedroom furniture at all, according to WIS-TV.

"My heart went out for him," Acerra told the station. "I thought the little things that he needed I could give him, to make him a happier kid."

So Acerra returned a few weeks later with a bed, a desk, a chair and a television. He even got a game system for the teen that someone had donated after hearing the story. Acerra plans to come back in the future with more furniture.

He also gave the kid something far more important: friendship.

"I didn't do this for publicity or to get people to notice me," Acerra told WIS. "I did it because I could. It was the right thing to do and I think people should do things like this."

I think most people would be shocked that this incident is not that unusual in American law enforcement. I saw this and other random acts of kindness and charity from both police officers and firefighters time and again. Most of the time no one even knew who was responsible...things just arrived or problems just got fixed. In spite of some member's negative opinion of cops, most of us got in to the field to help others and do good for the community. It sounds a little simplistic, but most cops what desperately to help the community in a positive manner, but most of the time we're placed in no win situations by that same community. That's why a lot of the good or help is given anonymously.

When I was a park ranger, I'd work with the Sheriffs dept. deputies often. They were by and large great dudes who understood how much it sucked to do the kind of work we did. That would change the minute we got down to business on someone. Their demeanor would completely change and they'd go into 'cop mode'. So while there are some really bad cops out there most of the asshole cops you meet are not actually assholes but are adopting a trained persona to avoid getting walked all over by the small but violent percentage that sees kindness as weakness.
