CHICAGO -- A manhunt was underway in far north suburban Fox Lake, after a police officer was shot and injured during a traffic stop, CBS Chicago reports.

Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko said an officer was shot Tuesday morning near Rollins Road and Route 59.

Sources told CBS Chicago that the officer had died but police officials have yet to comment publicly on the officer's condition.

Lake County Sheriff's Det. Chris Covelli said, around 7:50 a.m., the officer radioed he was pursuing three suspects, after looking into their "suspicious activity." Police lost radio contact with the officer, who was later found with a gunshot wound.

Covelli said police were conducting a ground and air search for three suspects -- two white males and a black male. Unconfirmed dispatch reports indicated the suspects might have taken the officer's gun and pepper spray.

(CNN)An Illinois police officer was shot and killed in Lake County on Tuesday, a law enforcement source told CNN. A search is on for three suspects, authorities said.

Law enforcement on foot and in helicopters are combing the area, said Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Christopher Covelli.
The shooting happened about 10 minutes before 8 a.m. local time, according to the sergeant.

Canine units have also been dispatched, and residents have been asked to remain inside their homes and businesses, he said.
"We asked residents to report any suspicious activity they happen to see, whether they think it's something minor or major and to keep an eye out for these three individuals," Covelli said.

This is a social problem. These acts do not help the relationship between LEO's and civilians; it makes it worse. Now LEO's will be more likely to use force because they do not know who is out to kill them.
