New York's Finest were more like New York's strongest when they saved a Bronx man who was trapped under a taxi Monday.

Police say Luis Velasquez, 19, was hit by and pinned under a taxi when he ran into traffic as police responded to a dispute outside a restaurant.

That, Rico Elias told CBS New York station WCBS-TV, is when police sprang into action.

"They lifted it up! There was no jack. They used their hands and backs and lifted the car up and over and got him out!", exclaimed Elias, who videotaped the incident from a window of his apartment.

At least a dozen officers helped lift the taxi, a Ford Crown Victoria that weighs more than 3,800 pounds.

"The sarge said, 'Let's get it up,' and they got it up, and they broke their butts doing it,' Elias marveled.

Velasquez was reported in critical condition in a local hospital with head trauma and other very serious injuries.

Elias, a cabbie himself, said he feels for the driver who struck Velasquez.

"He didn't expect this. He probably didn't even know he hit the guy," Elias lamented.

Investigators agreed -- the taxi driver will not face charges.

there is no ways that just the rear of the vehicle weights 3,800 pounds, yes the car as a whole maybe, so if you take it the weight is only half 1,900 lbs, a dozen officers which is only 158lbs, or in other words a normal americans lunch. not impressed

Lifting a car isn't as hard as you think.

You dont use your backs, you use your legs and you keep air in your lungs.

The only problem is the suspension, as you need to hitch it from a higher point to overcome it.

I know. I used to lift weights and work around a bad back.

You also put your knees up on the bench while doing bench presses to take pressure off of your back.

I did 165 pounds and weighed 135 at the time, which was my goal - to lift my body weight.

We hear stories of mothers lifting cars off of their children, but, the more, the less strain on one person :)

Knowing how the cabbies hate to bathe in NY I thought the passenger just elected to ride under the cab for health reasons...sigh
