ALBANY — A 44-year-old woman stole her 3-year-old grandson's Christmas gifts and sold them for crack while she was supposed to be baby-sitting him, police said.

Andrea Ocasio was arrested early Saturday after her son came home at 3 a.m. to his North Lake Avenue apartment and found the door wide open. The 3-year-old was asleep on a couch by himself, Christmas presents were missing and Ocasio, who was supposed to be watching the boy, was gone.

The man called police and went outside where he saw Ocasio come out of a drug house down the road, city police said.

The son confronted her about taking the gifts and leaving her grandson alone, police said. Officers arrived and interviewed the woman, who admitted to taking the gifts and leaving the home.

Police said the gifts were recovered from the drug house and were returned to the youngster.

Ocasio was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and petit larceny. She was arraigned Saturday at Albany City Court.

Indeed, Amy. I find it hard to believe he was completely oblivious to the fact that his mother was a crackhead. I would certainly hope he never let's that woman near his child again unless she get's some help.

In my experience family will leave their kids with alcoholics, drug addicts...abusers etc thinking that somehow the family instinct will override the addiction or abuse. Or they are so use to the persons behavior and habits from growing up around it that they have somehow talked themselves into believing it isnt as severe as it actually is. People do this and place their kids directly in harms way constantly when a little common sense would go a long way.
