Poland's prime minister says his country is no longer prepared to take the 7,000 refugees it agreed to accept in negotiations with the European Union because of the deadly Brussels attacks.

Beata Szydlo said on Wednesday that she does "not see any possibility for the refugees to come to Poland" after explosions rocked the Belgian capital a day earlier, according to Polish broadcaster Superstacja.

Poland had planned to admit an initial 400 refugees this year, and the rest would be allowed in over the next three years.

Last year, thousands of Poles took to the streets and social media to promote participation in anti-refugee marches across the country, organised by far-right nationalist movements such as the National Radical Camp.

In October, President Andrzej Duda said the government should take steps to protect its citizens from refugees bringing in "possible epidemics".

The comments by the president, whose role is largely ceremonial, echo those of Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the populist Law and Justice party, of which Duda is a member.

The Poles may be wrong, but IF by some chance they are able to prevent an attack....then it MIGHT be worth the crap they will receive from the EU.

my once beautiful home would be fucking stoked to only have 7k. we have 90k. crime rate rised quite a bit and raping and groping is now totally normal look how huge austria is. we totally can take that. not

Poland's foreign minister says the government stands by its commitment to take in 7,000 refugees, on condition they are checked for security and are willing to settle in Poland.

Poland had previously agreed on that number, but following the attacks in Brussels last week Prime Minster Beata Szydlo said she saw "no possibility" of accepting any migrants. The words were understood as reneging on the refugees deal.

But Witold Waszczykowski said on TVP INFO late Tuesday that Poland will be ready to "review the applications" of those refugees whose identities are confirmed, who are declared as posing no security threat and who are willing to come to Poland. He expressed doubt as to whether 7,000 such refugees could be found.
