Re: Pet Bear Mauls Man to Death in Ohio
Since my bear-maul thread is bumped, I feel I should update the topic. Unfortunately for the bear, the bear has been killed. (I doubt the dead dude would have wanted his favorite bear killed, even if it killed him) Bear in Fatal Attack Euthanized FOX8.com Staff Writer 8:02 PM EDT, August 21, 2010 COLUMBIA STATION, Ohio - The bear involved in the fatal attack on a 24-year-old man has been euthanized, Fox 8 News reports. According to a source close to the bear's owner, Sam Mazzola, "Iroquois," a 400 lb. black bear, was put down by a state-licensed veterinarian on Saturday. The decision to euthanize the animal was made at the request of Brent Kandra's family, the source said. Kandra was mauled on Thursday after opening the bear's cage for a feeding. He died hours later from "sharp and blunt injuries to the body consistent with a bear attack" a coroner's spokesperson said. Mazzola has previously had his exotic animal license revoked for providing false information to the USDA. He has also been in the spotlight for defending a controversial bear wrestling exhibit despite objections from federal regulators. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources could not confirm if Mazzola had active permits for his wildlife. On Friday, detectives from the Lorain County Sheriff's Office served a search warrant on Mazzola's property to retrieve records relating to the animals, and any video recordings possibly made during the incident. Mazzola said he was shocked by the outcome of the attack. "We all get bit...but we've never been close to a life-threatening injury," he told Fox 8 News on Friday. All evidence collected on Mazzola's property will be forwarded to the Lorain County Prosecutor's Office for review. |
