PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - The grandfather of a boy who Pennsylvania authorities say was starved nearly to death, appeared in court on Tuesday to face 14 charges including aggravated assault, false imprisonment and attempted first-degree murder.Dennis Beighley, his wife Deana Beighley and step-daughter Mary Rader, have been charged with participating in torturing and nearly killing Rader's 7-year-old son in Greenville, Pennsylvania.The boy was starved, beaten and his family only allowed him to bathe in ice water, according to the criminal complaint, which said he was not allowed out of the house except for the back porch, where he would catch bugs and eat them.

The child was pulled out of school in August 2013 and weighed less than 25 pounds (11 kg) when he was rescued in June after authorities were tipped by neighbors.School officials said that before the boy was removed from Hempfield Elementary School, his mother sent a note to the school asking her son not be fed breakfast.Connie Timashenka, who was principal of Hempfield Elementary School at the time, said when she found out about what the boy endured she felt "sickness and a feeling of disbelief."Investigators interviewed the boy's two normal-weight sisters, ages 11 and 4, and determined that the boy had been singled out for abuse, according to the complaint. A 9-year-old brother also was underweight but not as severely, it said.Dennis Beighley appeared before judge Robert Yeatts at the Mercer County Courthouse wearing an orange jumpsuit and hand and leg shackles.Rader and Deanna Beighley waived their right to appear at their arraignment today.

The boy and his siblings are currently in foster care, according to the Mercer County District Attorney's Office.

Why didn't the school intervene? Surely someone noticed the drastic change, the weight loss, he had to have odd behaviors coming from that kind of environment. Sometimes schools are the only safety net most of these kids have. The school should have intervened. So sad either way.

Mom, grandparents starved boy and have been arrested for doing so.

In June a woman walking her dog in Greenville was startled by a skeleton like figure she spotted in a back yard.

The lady who eventually realized that it was a malnourished child called authorities.

Police officers who arrived at a home located at 35 N. Second St., Greenville were shocked to find a 7-year-old almost starved to death.

The kid who weighed only 20 pounds was often beaten with a belt by his mother Mary C. Rader, 28, and his grandparents Dennis C. Beighley, 58, and Deana Beighley, 47.

His sisters ages 11 and 14 appeared healthy and his brother, 9, was a bit underfed.

The sisters told police that her family hated the boy so they kept him in his room feeding him small amounts of tuna and eggs.

The hungry child would often go out to catch bugs in the back yard to eat.

According the siblings, the boy was beaten by the adults when ever they found him stealing peanut butter and bread to eat.

The trio added that their little brother never took a shower, unless he was being punished with icy cold water.

The tortured child was rushed to UPMC Children’s Hospital Child Advocacy Center where doctors believed that he was days from having a cardiac arrest.

Physicians explained that the best medicine for the child is food and water. He has gained 20 pounds since being rescued.

The two brothers and two sisters have been placed in foster care.

As for the mom and grandparents they were arrested, charged with false imprisonment, endangering the welfare of children among other things.

The trio was released on bail and will appear in court on July 30.
