A San Antonio man was hit by a car on Friday when he ran into traffic, pursued by a man in a gorilla suit.

Paul Nimnicht, 32, darted onto the highway just after midnight, a nearby Hooters patron told police. The Hooters patron said someone in a gorilla costume appeared to have been following Nimnicht, according to KENS 5.

The gorilla-suited individual was ultimately identified as an employee of the Coco Bongo, a tropical-themed nightclub near the highway, Fox San Antonio reports. The employee told investigators that Nimnicht had been visiting the nightclub and had remarked he wanted to kill himself shortly before making a run for the highway.

The employee was running after Nimnicht to try to stop him from committing suicide, police say.

Though two cars swerved to avoid Nimnicht, he was ultimately hit by a white Infiniti. He was taken to a local hospital and is listed as in stable condition, according to KSAT.

Suicidal Man Hit by Car While Being Chased by Man in GORILLA Suit - I Stand Corrected!

Paul Nimnicht, 32, was struck by a white Infiniti when he ran into traffic along Highway 281 in San Antonio, Texas after being followed by a man dressed in a gorilla costume.

Police said the man in a gorilla suit was a waiter at the CoCo Bongo who ran after Mr Nimnicht, a patron at the nightclub, to stop him from committing suicide.

Near tragedy: Paul Nimnicht, 32, (photo below), was suicidal and was struck by a car when he ran into traffic in San Antonio, Texas as he was chased by a man in a gorilla suit.

Witnesses told police that around midnight Mr Nimnicht had said he wanted to kill himself inside the nightclub, then ran outside toward the highway, according to a police report.

Mr Nimnicht had left the bar without paying his tab, according to police. The man in the gorilla suit had heard that Mr Nimnicht was considering suicide.

A witness at the highway told police Mr Nimnicht could be seen being followed by the man in the gorilla costume.

As Mr Nimnicht bolted into traffic on the highway, several cars swerved to avoid hitting him. However, the driver of the Infiniti, Nathan Girton, 31, could not avoid hitting the man. Mr Girton was not drinking and stopped to help the suicidal man, police said.

Mr Nimnicht was taken to University Hospital for minor injuries.
Police say alcohol may have played a role in the incident.

He also may have caused some sort of disturbance at the CoCo Bongo, but police did not make this clear.

Mr. Nimnicht was listed in stable condition at the hospital.
