The routine Flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai International Airport to Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport was interrupted today when a sudden mid-air cockpit attack plunged the aircraft into a terrifying 17,000-foot descent near the Saudi-Jordanian border.

What began as a standard commercial flight became a desperate struggle for survival as passengers and crew worked together to stop an insider threat and bring the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to safety.

The twin-engine Boeing 737 MAX 8 took off from Dubai carrying passengers traveling toward Israel. Up in the cockpit, the flight was under the command of Captain Smit Machchhar, an experienced Indian pilot, alongside an Omani co-pilot.

For the first portion of the journey, the flight proceeded normally, cruising at its designated altitude as it tracked northwest across the Arabian Peninsula.

The situation changed completely as the aircraft neared the border region between Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Without warning, the Omani co-pilot pulled out a sharp object and attacked Captain Machchhar inside the locked cockpit.

The co-pilot stabbed the captain multiple times, inflicting severe wounds, and pushed the aircraft's control column forward. The sudden input sent the Boeing 737 into a steep, high-speed dive, causing the plane to plunge more than 17,000 feet in less than two minutes.

As gravity shifted and cabin pressure altered during the rapid descent, Captain Machchhar fought back despite his injuries.

Before collapsing from his wounds, he managed to reach the cockpit door control panel and hit the emergency release button, unlocking the armored door from the inside.

The sudden drop triggered chaos in the main cabin, throwing loose objects into the air. However, the unlocked door allowed immediate intervention.

Recognizing the extreme danger, a group of Israeli passengers, alongside both on-duty and off-duty flight crew members, rushed the cockpit.

They burst through the open door, physically tackled the Omani co-pilot, and pulled him away from the flight controls, successfully subduing him.

With the attacker restrained, the immediate challenge was recovering the aircraft from its dive. By chance, qualified off-duty pilots ( one was British) were among the passengers on board. They quickly stepped into the cockpit, took over the controls, pulled the aircraft out of its plunge, and stabilized the flight.

The crew immediately transmitted emergency squawk codes to regional air traffic control: Squawk 7700 to signal a general emergency and Squawk 7500, the international aviation code for unlawful interference or a hijacking in progress.

Aviation authorities routed the damaged flight to the nearest suitable airfield. The pilots guided the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to a safe emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Emergency medical teams and Saudi security forces met the aircraft on the tarmac. Captain Machchhar and the injured co-pilot were rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Saudi authorities took the Omani co-pilot into custody at the airport. Because the incident involved an attack on a flight bound for Tel Aviv, Israeli security officials quickly classified the event as a suspected terrorist attack, though regional and international aviation bodies launched a formal, joint investigation to determine the exact timeline, security breaches, and motives behind the insider threat.

The passengers remained at Tabuk Airport for several hours while Flydubai arranged for a replacement aircraft. Later that same day, the secondary plane boarded the passengers and completed the journey, landing safely at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv.

Yaniv Sharir is an Israeli passenger who was among the very first to storm the cockpit. He physically tackled the attacking co-pilot, placed him in a chokehold, and pulled the plane's controls back to stop the dive. He later met with the Israeli Prime Minister while still wearing his blood-stained t-shirt from the struggle.

Asaf Rajuan is an Israeli passenger who, alongside a small group of "three to five guys," acted on pure instinct to breach the cockpit, neutralize the assailant, and assist the crew in tying him up.

Zvika Meness is a passenger who forcefully jumped onto the attacker alongside others, securing him tightly using the plane's own zip-ties and multimedia headphone cables.
