BOGIA, Papua New Guinea, July 5 (UPI) -- Police in Papua New Guinea arrested 29 people believed involved in the deaths and cannibalization of seven people.

The arrests came during raids Wednesday on four camps in the Bogia district of Madang province, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Police said 12 of the 29 arrested are the suspected murderers, but all of those arrested allegedly cannibalized the victims.

Provincial police commander Anthony Wagambie Jr. said members of the group said they believed their victims were witches.

"They were looking at going out and looking for sorcerers, suspected people who do sorcery in the area," Wagambie said. "So they started getting together and said they will go out and get rid of the sorcerers. They said they were led there by spirits but then they've gone a step further and started killing people and decided to eat their body parts."

Police said the group members will be charged with willful murder and cannibalism, and that more raids will be carried out to capture other members of the group.

-------------------------------------------------------

MARK COLVIN: Sorcery and cannibalism are words that conjure images of a distant, brutal past.

But in Papua New Guinea police have arrested dozens of people they say murdered and then ate, victims they believed were sorcerers.

PNG correspondent Liam Fox reports.

LIAM FOX: Early this week police in Madang on PNG's north coast received shocking reports out of the remote Bogia district.

ANTHONY WAGAMBIE JR: The murders started taking place last week Thursday. Four people were killed and their bodies parts dismembered and eaten and then on the weekend there was another three women killed.

LIAM FOX: At first the provincial police commander Anthony Wagambie Jr. suspected a cargo cult was responsible for the murders.

There's a long history of cargo cults in PNG, particularly in remote, undeveloped areas.

They often involve a shared belief that magic or religious rituals will deliver followers modern manufactured goods, or cargo as they call it.

But Mr Wagambie says his officers found something much more sinister during raids on four camps yesterday; a group of murderous, witch-hunting cannibals.

ANTHONY WAGAMBIE JR: They were looking at going out and looking for sorcerers, suspected people who do sorcery in the area. So they started getting together and said they will go out and get rid of the sorcerers. How they pinpointed these people they said they were led there by spirits but then they've gone a step further and started killing people and decided to eat their body parts.

LIAM FOX: Twenty-nine people were arrested during the raids.

Mr Wagambie says investigators believe 12 of them committed the murders and they all cannibalised the victims.

ANTHONY WAGAMBIE JR: Amongst the group themselves they have also confessed, especially the followers, to eating some body parts and eating soup made from body parts.

LIAM FOX: In PNG there's still a widespread belief in sorcery or puripuri as its known.

It's not uncommon for people to attribute puripuri as the cause of unexplained deaths.

Ken Fairweather is the current MP for Sumkar, which is not far from Bogia.

He says many Papua New Guineans, and not just those in remote areas, believe puripuri is still used to curse, poison or kill people.

KEN FAIRWEATHER: Oh absolutely, absolutely; nearly everyone does. There's even political leaders today and other leaders are terrified of puripuri, absolutely terrified. It's a big part of culture.

LIAM FOX: Mr Fairweather's own theory is that the belief in sorcery is related to the widespread prevalence of malaria.

KEN FAIRWEATHER: You'll find any area that has lots of malaria, lots of mosquitoes, you'll also have this propensity to have puripuri if you like or whatever you want to call it, that's associated with sickness, hallucination - if you've had malaria you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

LIAM FOX: Police say they expect to charge those who've been arrested with wilful murder and cannibalism.

This is one of those things that you're glad when it happens far far far from where you are.

I don't think cannibals care if you're a vegetarian. They'll still eat you..
