Johannesburg - Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend in the early hours of Thursday morning, apparently after thinking she was an intruder, Beeld reported.

The police's Captain Sarah Mcira confirmed the woman had been shot in the head and arm.

She died at the scene.



Pistorius is apparently in police custody.


Police are investigating a case of murder after a woman was shot dead at a Pretoria house in the early hours of Thursday morning.

According to Beeld, paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was being questioned at Silverwoods Country Estate in connection with the shooting. He is expected to appear in Pretoria Magistrate’s court later on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Katlego Mogale told eNCA that she could not confirm the man's identity until he appears in court.

She added that a 9mm pistol was recovered from the scene and a case of murder is being investigated. The woman was apparently shot four times.

Police are still busy with preliminary investigations on the scene, and statements are being taken from neighbours.

Paramedics were called to the house after the shooting and declared the woman dead at the scene.

She confirmed that there have "previously been allegations of a domestic nature at Mr Pistorius's home".

Beukes said there are witnesses and neighbours who claim to have heard things earlier on Wednesday evening and when the shooting took place.

Police also expressed "surprise" at reports that the shooting was an accident.

"The SA Police Service were just as surprised this morning to hear on the radio that allegations had been made that the deceased had been perceived to be a burglar," Beukes said.

"We were very surprised and those allegations did not come from us."

Beukes said police will reveal the reasons why they are opposing bail when he appears in court

Police said Mr Pistorius was at a local police station, adding that a friend of his was killed at his home.

They confirmed a 26-year-old man would appear in court later. South African police do not usually name suspects until they appear in court.

Mr Pistorius, 26, was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics.

The precise circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear. Some reports said that Mr Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder.

But police said they were "surprised" to hear reports that the deceased had been mistaken for a burglar.

They added that there had been previous incidents at the address and described them as "allegations of a domestic nature". Police also said that they had been interviewing witnesses and that they would oppose any bail application.

Miss Steenkamp's publicist confirmed to the BBC that the 30-year-old model had died.

"Everyone who knew her is in tears. She was an absolute angel, the sweetest, sweetest human being, a kind human being," Sarit Tomlinson said.

The news that Mr Pistorius may have killed his girlfriend will shock the country as the athlete is regarded as one of South Africa's national icons, reports the BBC's Peter Biles from Cape Town.
