Five Killed in Orlando Workplace Shooting, Officials Say

Five people at a business near Orlando, Fla., were fatally shot by a former employee who went through a warehouse singling out his victims before killing himself, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said on Monday.

Sheriff Jerry L. Demings told reporters that deputies arrived at the business, Fiamma Inc., a few minutes after 8 a.m. on Monday after receiving a call about an active shooting.

All five of the victims were employees of Fiamma, which makes awnings and accessories for recreational vehicles, the sheriff said. Four of them — three men and a woman — were found dead when deputies arrived, he said. A fifth person, a man, was transported to a hospital, where he died.

The sheriff identified the gunman as John Robert Neumann Jr., 45, who had been fired from his job at Fiamma in April. He had shot and killed himself by the time law enforcement arrived, Sheriff Demings said.

Mr. Neumann was armed with a semiautomatic handgun and a large hunting knife, the sheriff said, and reloaded the gun at least once.

The relationship between the gunman and his victims was not immediately clear. Some of them had been his co-workers, Sheriff Demings said. But the sheriff said that Mr. Neumann was “singling out individuals.” The shootings took place at different sites throughout the building.

At one point, he told a woman who was a temporary employee and who had walked in on the shooting to get out.

“We don’t know why he chose today,” Sheriff Demings said.

Sheriff Demings said that the authorities had been called to the same business in June 2014, responding to an episode of workplace violence involving Mr. Neumann, but no charges were filed then.

Four of the victims were identified on Monday afternoon: Jeffrey Roberts, 57; Robert Snyder, 69; Brenda Montanez-Crespo, 44; and Kevin Clarke, 53.

There were seven other workers there who were not hurt, the sheriff said. An eighth person, possibly a vendor, was also there and was being interviewed as a witness.

The sheriff said that Mr. Neumann was believed to live alone with no family in the area. He was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1999.

He said there was no indication that the man was a member of any organization or that the shooting was an act of terrorism.

Mayor Teresa Jacobs of Orange County and officials with the Federal Bureau of Investigation were at the scene later Monday morning.

Next week is the first anniversary of the attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, which left 50 people dead in one of the worst mass shootings in United States history.

“Over the past year, the Orlando community has been challenged like never before,” Gov. Rick Scott of Florida said in a statement after the shooting, which he called a “tragic incident.”

According to Sheriff Jerry Demings, police responded to a “workplace violence” incident involving Neumann at Fiamma in 2014. Demings said Neumann “allegedly battered another employee,” but no charges were filed.

Further details about that incident were not immediately available. Demings told reporters it is not believed that the victim in that 2014 incident was one of the victims in the shooting.

Demings said the 45-year-old gunman has a “minor” criminal history, including charges like possession of marijuana, driving under the influence and misdemeanor battery. Online records show he has been arrested several times in multiple Florida counties since 1995.

He was charged with fleeing from a law enforcement (causing a high speed chase), willfully fleeing or eluding a law enforcement officer on August 21, 1995, by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. He was also charged in that incident with running a stop sign, driving without a seatbelt and driving with a suspended license.

He pleaded guilty to all of those charges and was sentenced to probation. In 2000, he was charged with violating his probation and sentenced to nine days in jail.

In December 1999, Neumann was arrested by the Altamonte Springs Police Department in Seminole County and charged with theft, felony driving with a suspended license, giving a false name and driving without insurance or a registration. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Neumann was charged with felony possession of stolen property in March 2003 by the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, along with felony possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was again charged with habitual driving with a stolen license and received a total of 378 days in jail for that incident.

His last arrest came in December 2009, when he was charged with possession of not more than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and leaving the scene of a crash involving damage to property by the Altamonte Springs Police Department. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail in February 2010.
