Original ‘Rosie the Riveter’ Girl, Now 93 Years Old, is Still Working
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nati...icle-1.1470166 At 93, Elinor Otto is still running at full speed. The California woman is one of the original “Rosie the Riveter” girls, part of a wave of women who stepped up to work on assembly lines after the men went overseas to fight in World War II. Otto hasn’t stopped riveting since she heard that call in 1942. Every weekday morning, she gets up at 4 a.m. and drives over to the Boeing plant in Long Beach, where she punches rivets into C-17 cargo planes. "I'm a working person, I guess. I like to work. I like to be around people that work. I like to get up, get out of the house, get something accomplished during the day," she told NBC. When she started, Otto was making 65 cents an hour. And back then, she had to spend $20 a month on her son’s childcare. But Otto soon found out that she liked working. She loved the routine and going dancing with her coworkers at the end of the week. "It was ballroom dancing," she said. "I liked that." Much has changed since then. She went through several marriages and became a grandmother, but she kept coming back to her old post on the assembly line. Now, she makes about $40 per hour. In honor of Otto and the other women who worked alongside her over the years and eventually spearheaded the women’s rights movement, the city of Long Beach founded the Rosie the Riveter Park. Her boss Don Pitcher calls her an inspiration. "When I think to myself, 'Why am I slowing up? Why am I home?' I think that 'Elinor is at work. And Elinor is 93!'" Pitcher said. But Otto hasn’t finalized plans for retirement. She plans to work for as long as she can, or at least until next year, when Boeing ends its contract for C-17s. "I'll be the one that closes the door," Otto said. "I'll be the last one there." |

that's one of the ways you keep healty. she even looks better than some 70 year olds i know. think when she stops working and doesn't find a regular private life and hobby she will die in just a few years like many other retired people. |
