Woman's leg severed when hit by car

Wednesday, September 07, 2011

An elderly woman lost part of one leg and may lose the other after she was pinned to a metal fence by a car Wednesday.

The 71-year-old victim underwent emergency surgery at Sunybrook hospital following the 11 a.m. collision in the Newtonbrook mall parking lot at Yonge St. And Cummer Ave().

The 87-year-old woman driving the car wasn’t injured.

Toronto Police Const. Hugh Smith said the driver was trying to make a turn by the Food Basics store when she apparently lost control of her car and over-corrected.

But the car mounted a curb and pinned the passing pedestrian to the shopping cart barricade.

The impact was enough to push in the metal bar that is part of the barricade.

Smith said the left leg was severed below the knee while the right leg was crushed. Doctors aren’t sure if they can save that leg.

Because of the victim’s age, the severe injuries and the loss of a significant amount of blood could be life threatening, police said.

Smith said passersby and supermarket staff came to the victim’s aid, using ice to protect the severed leg and trying to staunch the blood flow.

The store manager refused to talk about the life-saving efforts, deferring questions to head office.

Toronto EMS put the severed leg into a bag along with ice in hopes that it could be reattached. But doctors were unable to do so, police said.

The scene was marked with a large amount of blood and towels and a bag of ice.

“Emergency services were here quite rapidly,” Smith said.

But he added a number of people stopped to help.

“It’s quite tragic to come across that,” Smith said. “A lot of people would walk away but a lot of these (people) stayed behind to help her out.”

Smith said it’s likely the driver will undergo a mandatory driver’s retest if “she is found at fault.”

No charges have been filed.

Only a mandatory driver's retest?

She ruined a person's life. Throw her in prison.
