Ohio’s House of Filth, 16 Siblings Rescued From Squalor and Silence

Hamden, Ohio. Authorities have revealed chilling new details following the rescue of 16 children from what investigators are calling a "house of horrors" in rural Vinton County.

The children, ranging in age from 1.5 to 18 years old, were discovered by chance on June 30, 2026, when law enforcement officers arrived at a home on Ohmer Street to execute a search warrant for an entirely unrelated matter.

The Discovery of "Pure Evil" inside the 1,336-square-foot wooden home built in 1900. Police discovered the siblings living in squalor that Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson described as "pure evil" and the worst scene of his career.

According to investigators, the children had spent the better part of the last 4 years confined to a single 12-by-12-foot room. The home was filled with mountains of trash and an overwhelming presence of bacterial and human waste, forcing first responders to wear protective masks.

"Most of our livestock was kept in better conditions than the children," Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain said in a press conference.

First responders reported that the rescued children had blank expressions, were covered in bug bites, and were completely silent during transport to the hospital.

Officials noted that the family moved frequently around Ohio to avoid detection, slipping entirely through the cracks of the social safety net.

None of the children were enrolled in school, and neighbors in the village of fewer than 1,000 people stated they had no idea children even lived in the home.

The level of severe neglect left many of the children heavily under-communicative, with officials describing them as "almost feral."

Several children are nonverbal, and the oldest sibling, an 18-year-old with developmental disabilities, was unable to write or spell her own name.

Following their removal from the property, 7 children were immediately hospitalized. Two were airlifted via medical helicopter to pediatric trauma centers due to severe malnutrition and critical medical emergencies. All 16 children have since been placed into state protective custody.

Four adults residing in the home have been arrested and each charged with multiple counts of second-degree felony child endangerment due to the serious physical harm inflicted on the children.

The defendants are: Elizabeth Siders, 33 (Mother), Gary L. Siders Jr., 36 (Father), Christina Siders, 67 (Grandmother), Gary L. Siders Sr., 73 (Grandmother).

During their virtual arraignment, all four family members pleaded not guilty. Judge Laila Fetherolf Rogers originally set cash bonds at $300,000 each.

However, Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer confirmed that Gary Siders Sr. suffered a fall on his way to his bond hearing, revealing a severe, undisclosed medical condition.

Because Vinton County is one of Ohio's poorest and smallest counties, the cost of his specialized medical care would have bankrupted local resources.

As a result, Siders Sr. was released on a signature bond to a medical facility under strict GPS tracking. His defense team has since filed a motion questioning his mental competency to stand trial.

Attorneys for the family have begun pushing back against the state's narrative. Elizabeth Siders’ defense attorney publicly disputed claims that the children were "feral" or strictly locked in a single room, arguing that there is no evidence the mother acted with malicious intent.

Defense lawyers also successfully lobbied for a court-ordered gag order to prevent further details from being leaked to the media before the trial.

To manage what state officials are calling an "unprecedented child welfare crisis", Ohio Governor Mike DeWine approved $1 million in emergency state funds. The money will directly support Vinton County in covering the massive, long-term therapeutic foster care and medical costs required to help the 16 siblings heal.
