Officials Say 15-Year-Old Boy's Deadly Fall a Suicide
LA CRESCENTA, Calif. (KTLA) -- A 15-year-old boy intentionally jumped to his death Friday afternoon at Crescenta Valley High School in full view of other students, sheriff's officials said.
The student -- identified as Crescenta Valley High sophomore Drew Ferraro -- climbed a building on campus and got a running start before jumping off a ledge during the school's lunch hour, Sheriff's Lt. John Corina said in a Friday news conference.
"There was blood everywhere and the backpack was several feet away from him," said a Crescenta Valley High student named Alexis.
Alexis was one of the dozens of students who were witnesses to Ferraro's deadly fall.
Students told KTLA that the fatal fall happened near the campus' administration building and Ferraro fell on a concrete plaza area.
Glendale Unified School District officials posted a statement late Friday afternoon on the district website expressing condolences to the family.
"Our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time. Our first concern is for the well-being of all of our students," Superintendent Dick Sheehan said in the statement. "Together with our supportive community, we will help our students get through this."
Police said there has been no evidence suggesting bullying led to Ferraro's fatal fall.
Crisis councilors will be on the school's campus next week to help students cope with the suicide, district officials said.
