Re: Official 2014 FIFA World Cup Thread

Luis Suarez bite: 888 Poker cancel its sponsorship with the striker after four-month ban.

Poker brand 888 has cancelled its sponsorship deal with Luis Suarez after the Uruguay striker was banned from all soccer-related activity for four months for biting an opponent during a World Cup match.

Suarez, one of the most talented but controversial players, lit up the English Premier League last season with club side Liverpool and became one of the online gambling company's brand ambassadors only last month.

"888poker signed Luis Suarez following a fantastic season for which his achievements were widely recognised," it said on Friday.

"Regrettably, following his actions during Uruguay's World Cup match against Italy on Tuesday, 888poker has decided to terminate its relationship with Luis Suarez with immediate effect," it said in a brief statement.

Suarez was hit with the longest ban ever imposed at a World Cup on Thursday by soccer's governing body Fifa.

They haven't released how much his deal with 888 was but it would be in the millions......

=========================================

Following the announcement of Suarez’s suspension on Thursday afternoon, senior Adidas officials were engaged in an emergency to meeting to decide their position on the controversial striker.

The company have dropped the Uruguayan from all commercial activities for the rest of the World Cup in Brazil and set for talks at the highest level with the player and his representatives at the end of the tournament.

A statement read: 'Adidas fully supports FIFA’s decision. Adidas certainly does not condone Luis Suarez’s recent behaviour and we will again be reminding him of the high standards we expect from our players. We have no plan to use Suarez for any additional marketing activities during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. We will discuss all aspects of our future partnership directly with Suarez and his team following the World Cup.’

FIFA are Adidas’ longest-serving partners, with a relationship that began in 1970 and was last year extended until 2030. It is anticipated that they may come under pressure to support the stance of the world governing body over that of their client Suarez and some will feel that Adidas must drop him entirely from their marketing campaigns.

Adidas are one of several sponsors concerned with the image that Suarez’s actions promote and Sportsmail understands that Liverpool’s major shirt sponsors Standard Chartered are also set to add their voice to the debate later this afternoon.

If Adidas doesn't drop him, that's just telling other players to do whatever the fuck they want to do, too.

The online poker drop sucks, but should Adidas drop him - that will be monumental.
Maybe he should have a little chat with Tiger Woods on how to deal with losing all your money making sponsors.

I'll take soccer over golf any day of the week. Baseball is only fun if you're at the game, but NASCAR and golf put me into a coma.

Intense as shit match, they squeezed every last minute out of it but Chile screwed up one too many times in the penalties. Good job Brazil, deserved win
