Mansfield, The oak tree made famous in "The Shawshank Redemption," off Pleasant Valley Road, was heavily damaged during an afternoon storm.

Lee Tasseff, president of the Mansfield-Richland County Convention and Visitors Bureau, was saddened to learn the news.

"That's tragic," he said. "There was a couple that came in from Fort Wayne, Ind., today (Friday) to take the CVB's Shawshank Trail.

It's a very sentimental part of the trail.

Those people, besides seeing the Ohio State Reformatory prison, wanted to make sure they didn't miss the tree.

"We've had people want to know if they can propose under that tree, or have a picnic under that tree, and we tell them no, it's private property.

"There's all kinds of people who have taken pictures at the tree."

The road that Red (portrayed by Morgan Freeman) traveled when he was looking for Andy's (Tim Robbins) treasure was supposed to be in New England in the movie.
It actually was on Pleasant Valley Road, near Malabar Farm State Park.

Travelers on the bureau's Shawshank Trail drive east along Pleasant Valley Road, just past the entrance to Malabar Farm State Park.

They look to the left to see the famous oak tree where Red walked along a hayfield and removed stones from a rock wall where Andy buried his money.

The tree, beautiful in its own right, became somewhat famous after the film.

In the film, Red receives parole after 40 years and follows Andy's advice to visit Buxton. There, he finds a cache of money and a note left by Andy, mentioning Zihuatanejo.

Red violates his parole and crosses the border into Mexico. The two are happily reunited on a beach.

Louis Andres of Malabar Farm State Park said straight line winds damaged the tree around 2:30 p.m. Friday.

"The tree was rotted in the middle," he said. "I'm sorry to see it go. It's a landmark. A lot of people always are asking about it."

Friday afternoon's storm resulted in downed trees and broken limbs in and around Malabar Farm.

A power outage occurred, and power was restored around 6 p.m. Friday, Andres said.

The Ohio State Reformatory was the backdrop for much of "The Shawshank Redemption," filmed here in the summer of 1993. It was based on a Stephen King short story.

The prison, which closed in 1990 when Mansfield Correctional Institution opened nearby, is now a museum.

Tasseff said the short-term boost to the area during "Shawshank's" filming was close to $11 million, thanks to construction, food, taxes, hotels and apartments needed by filmmakers and their crews.

Whether or not the damaged tree will have to be cut down is unknown. The Dees family, which owns the farmland, could not be reached for comment.

I think it's a celebrity tree because it appeared in a movie or something... I don't get it either and I don't really care.

I know right? It's just one of the almost bazillion trees which exist on this planet, all of which risk willful deforestation, forest fires and severe thunderstorms. And yet they are concerned about the well being of ONE TREE.
