It doesn't speak. It doesn't juggle. It has balloons but doesn't hand them out. It probably doesn't even sleep. It just stands there, haunting our dreams with that sinister smile.

An anonymous man has been striking fear into the hearts of the Northampton, U.K., community by ominously standing around in creepy clown apparel.

The Northampton Herald & Post first reported the sightings earlier this month. The clown has allegedly been spotted all over town, and sometimes is seen carrying a clown teddy.

Efforts made to discover the identity of the jester have yielded few results. A recent YouTube video showing a man being interviewed in clown garb made waves, but the clown denied that it was him on his Facebook page.

"Too much hate not enough love," the clown wrote on Facebook. "No, I don't have a knife on me!, thats just stupid rumors spread by stupid people. I'm also 'not' on Twitter as it confuses the heck out of me."

Sightings of the clown have prompted the Twitter hashtag #northamptonclown, which is being used to speculate on the reasons for the clown's appearance, The Independent reported.

Whatever the reason, it doesn't look like this clown is leaving any time soon. And here we thought clowns couldn't get any scarier than Pennywise.

It is unknown at this time whether or not the clown feeds on the souls of children.

Yeah... creepy. Clowns in general creep my out. It's the whole "not able to tell what they're really thinking because of the painted on smile" thing. People in mascot costumes have the same effect on me.

The clown, which bears a striking resemblance to the character Pennywise in the film of Stephen King's horror novel It, has posed for a number of photographs around Northampton since Friday, September 13.
In an interview with the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, the entertainer declared his exploits to be in good humour rather than a sinister exercise.
He said: "I just wanted to amuse people. Most people enjoy being a bit freaked out and then they can laugh about it afterwards,
"It's like watching a horror movie. When people get scared, they usually start laughing.
"Naturally, some people would have been extremely frightened by what they saw, but I hope many are starting to see it as a bit of harmless fun.”

A Facebook page set up by the man behind the mask, named Spot Northampton's Clown, has attracted more than 125,000 'likes' from users across the globe. He signs off each update with "beep beep", the catchphrase of King's killer character.

One user wrote on the page: "I don't like clowns, but what you are doing for Northampton is quality".
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, said keeping his identity a secret was becoming increasingly difficult after locals started working out where he lived.
Coulrophobia is a universally recognised fear of clowns. In 2006 music festival Bestival had to adjust its clown fancy dress code following an unprecedented number of festival goers expressed an innate fear of the circus entertainers.
