North Las Vegas police officers say they found nine children living in an apartment littered with trash, without an operable bathroom or food to eat

Officers found the children sleeping on a soiled mattress with cockroaches crawling on them

A 2 month old baby was found sleeping with vomit covering his face

The parents, Donald Hemmings and Geneva Morgan, were charged with eight counts of child abuse, neglect or endangerment

A 2 month old baby died last week, a month after police said they found him living in deplorable conditions.

Donald Hemmings and Geneva Morgan were arrested December 20, on eight counts child abuse, neglect or endangerment after police say they failed to provide their children with an inhabitable environment or even the most bare essentials for nourishment.

Officers were initially dispatched to the North Las Vegas apartment to execute a search warrant for a robbery investigation, according to an arrest affidavit.

While executing the search warrant, officers said they found nine children under the age of 18 living in squalor.

Immediately after entering the apartment, officers observed, “an extraordinary amount of live German cockroaches crawling about the floor, walls and ceiling,” of the living room and adjacent kitchen, according to police documents.

Investigators described finding numerous children sleeping on a single soiled mattress, with approximately six inches of used food packaging stacked against the wall.

Based on the amount of garbage strewn about the room, the responding officer was initially unable to determine the exact number of children in the room, according to the affidavit.

The cockroaches were crawling throughout the entire room and all over the sleeping children, authorities said.

In a separate bedroom, officers found a 2 month old infant sleeping with vomit covering his face, according to police documents.

Authorities told HLN that baby died a month later.

The cause of the child’s death remains under investigation, according to CNN affiliate KVVU.

A search of the kitchen revealed only a few boxes of food, a quarter full gallon of milk and loose deli meat in the freezer, according to investigators.

Detectives called Child Protective Services, who later deemed the apartment uninhabitable and sent the children to live with family members, police said.

According to authorities, Morgan, 39, had twelve prior CPS abuse and neglect investigations opened against her dating back to 2006.

She pleaded guilty to her most recent charges on January 28, and is scheduled to appear for sentencing on May 27, in Clark County.

Hemmings, 42, is scheduled to be arraigned on February 11.

A call for comment from the parents' attorneys was not immediately returned.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV- A three month old boy has died, and was one of several children found living in squalor.

Thirty nine year old, Geneva Morgan, was in court Wednesday, admitting to raising eight children in unbearable living conditions.

According to an arrest report, on December 20th, police came to this apartment in North Las Vegas.

Cockroaches were crawling all over the walls and floors, garbage was laying throughout the home, the bathroom was covered in urine and feces.

In the freezer was loose deli meat, a quarter-full gallon of milk in the fridge and a few boxes of food in the cabinets.

But, the most startling discovery, police say, was several children sleeping on soiled mattresses in one bedroom, and an infant sleeping on an adult mattress in the master bedroom, with his face covered in vomit.

Morgan and her boyfriend, Donald Hemmings Jr., were arrested for child abuse and neglect.

Just last week, that infant died. Right now, it's unknown how or why he died.

Morgan's 20 year old daughter says her mother is not to blame for the baby's death.

"She's been in jail since December 20, and he just died on January 20th so that's like clearly impossible for her to hurt him," said Morgan's daughter, Jaushaun Feltus.

Feltus says one day, she noticed the baby wasn't breathing. He was rushed to the hospital where he died.

Right now, Feltus is taking care of her brothers and sisters who were living in the apartment.

"Geneva's devastated by that. One of the reasons we are doing the OR part of this is, so she can get out and make funeral arrangements for her son," said Morgan's attorney.

Morgan faces up to six years in jail, when she's sentenced in May.

Investigators have been called to the house several times for claims of neglect since 2006, but, most of those claims were found to be unsubstantiated.

Morgan was charged with neglect once, in 2007.
