I disagree with the guy in the studio that this sort of coverage promotes murderous ideation, but I think the bald dude is right on with what he's saying. Instead of taking collective responsibility for this sort of behavior, we distance ourselves by labeling these people crazy. I don't think that the individuals who perpetrated the My Lai Massacre were crazy, nor do I think the tens of thousands of Japanese troops who indiscriminately raped in murdered the citizens of Nanjing were crazy. Obviously these things happened under extreme circumstances, but the point is that the most normal of people can be driven to commit acts of insane violence. Of course some of these mass murderers are crazy, like the Manson's or Dahmer's of the world - or that guy that shot up Virginia Tech. |
