Police are responding to a shooting near the beach broadwalk in Hollywood, Florida.

Videos posted on Twitter Monday evening showed emergency medical crews responding and providing aid to multiple injured people. It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were injured or what their conditions were.

Police said there would be a heavy presence of officers as the investigation continues. Officials were also setting up an area for family members to reunite.

Hollywood Beach is a popular beach destination about 11 miles (17 kilometer) south of Fort Lauderdale and 20 miles (32 kilometer) north of Miami. The beach was expected to see more visitors than usual with the Memorial Day holiday.

Nine people were shot, including a one-year-old child, during an altercation between two groups near a busy area of the beach in Hollywood, Florida, Monday night.

Police have detained one person of interest but are still searching for an additional suspect, who was described as a Black man with dreadlocks and wearing a black short-sleeve shirt and camo shorts.

The injured range in age from 1 to 65.

Authorities say the shooting happened near Johnson Street and North Broadwalk, a bustling palm-tree lined pedestrian walkway that straddles the beach and features restaurants and shops.

The sound of gunfire sent people fleeing down the busy sidewalk and into the nearby sand, footage from the city’s beach camera live feeds show.

When police responded to the area around 6:45 p.m. ET, they found nine people had sustained gunshot wounds.

The injured were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

Though the hospital spokesperson said all the victims were in stable condition, but one person was undergoing surgery late Monday.

Authorities are asking people to avoid the area as the investigation continues.

A family assistance center has been set up near Johnson Street and North Ocean Drive, Bettineschi said.

“This is an area where families can go and they can talk to the detectives on scene and ask them questions about family members, and they can also get information about their vehicles that may be inside of the crime scene.”

Morgan Deslouches and Keshawn Paul Stewart, both 18, are charged with unlawful possession of a firearm; Deslouches is also charged with theft of a firearm and removing the serial number from a handgun, authorities said.

Until this Tuesday (30), five revolvers had been seized, with two of the weapons identified as stolen, including one from Miami-Dade and one from Texas. At a news conference, Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy said the two people arrested were not from Hollywood, but from other parts of South Florida.

“When someone does something like this in broad daylight with CCTV and CCTV on our boardwalk, know that they will be identified and caught and brought to justice.

We will not tolerate this type of behavior. We are a very peaceful city and we are not going to allow people to come into our city and behave this way with no regard for innocent people,” Levy said.
