Mother Flees from Police, Kills Son.
KANSAS CITY, MO —
An 11-year-old boy was killed in an accident on 71 Hwy late Wednesday night when the car he was in hit a semi-truck. Police said the boy's mother, 30, was driving and led officers on a short chase after they attempted to pull her over for a traffic violation.
Police said the woman stopped for a brief time, but then sped off. Police pursued her for a short distance, then called off the chase, fearing it would become too dangerous. Shortly after, the woman lost control of her car and crashed into a semi near Gregory and 71 Hwy.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His eight-year-old sister, also in the car at the time of the accident, was not severely injured. She is listed in good condition. Both children were wearing their seat belts. Their mother was taken to an area hospital and has critical injuries.
Police said the woman almost hit a police car on a different traffic stop, and that is why police were following her.
Westbound Gregory at 71 Hwy was temporarily shut down while police extracted the mother and her two children from the mangled car.
The accident occurred at the same intersection where 12-year-old Damian Slayton was killed in a multi-car accident on March 27, 2010. Clayton Dunlap, 31, who was high on PCP and marijuana, crashed into Slayton's mother's car, killing him. Dunlap had 45 prior convictions and pleaded guilty to second degree murder. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
